SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) erupted for a season-high 25 points and the Seton Hall women's basketball team upended Rutgers, 82-63, in the latest installment of the New Jersey rivalry in Walsh Gym on Wednesday.
Rutgers never led as the Pirates raced out to a 15-6 lead and never looked back. The victory gives Seton Hall head coach Anthony Bozzella 499 for his career.
Baines was brilliant, scoring a team-best 25 points on 8-for-17 shooting to go with eight rebounds.
Sophomore Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) had 18 points on the strength of four made three-pointers. Senior Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) had seven points and a career-high 11 assists.
THE STORY:
With the score tied at two, The Hall went on a 15-4 run, and a three-pointer by Gray with 5:11 left in the first quarter forced an early Rutgers timeout. Trailing 24-14, the Scarlet Knights scored seven straight to cut their deficit to three points with 8:08 left before halftime, but never drew closer.
Leading 30-25, The Hall closed out the first half with a 10-3 burst and took a 40-28 advantage into the locker room. Baines scored 16 of her team-high 25 points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Hall opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run in the first 1:44 and an offensive rebound and putback by A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill.) gave the Pirates a commanding 49-30 advantage.
A three-pointer by Sha'Lynn Hagans (Manassas, Va.) gave The Hall its largest lead of the game, 79-55, with 4:57 left to play, and the Pirates cruised from there.
THE NUMBERS:
- Seton Hall was 25-for-57 (43.9%) from the floor for the game, while Rutgers was 23-for-52 (44.2%). The Hall was 10-for-24 (41.7%) from three-point range, while the Scarlet Knights were 3-for-18 (16.7%).
- Baines had a season-high 25 points on 8-for-17 shooting from the floor, including 2-for-4 from three-point range. She also had eight rebounds.
- The Hall out-rebounded Rutgers, 24-to-18, which included a 14-to-12 edge on the offensive glass and a 22-to-13 advantage in second-chance points.
- Gray had 18 points on 6-for-13 shooting, including 4-for-10 from three-point range.
- Seton Hall was 22-for-27 (81.5%) from the free-throw line, while Rutgers was 14-for-17 (82.4%).
- Wright finished with seven points, a career-high 11 assists, two rebounds and two steals.
- Seton Hall forced 21 turnovers, while the Scarlet Knights forced 13. The Hall had a 30-to-13 advantage in points-off-turnovers.
- Freshman Savannah Catalon (Burleston, Texas) had a career-high 10 points to go with three steals and two assists.
- Davis pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go with five points.
THE NOTES:
- Seton Hall improves to 3-1 on the young season, while Rutgers drops to 2-2.
- The Hall is now 12-36 all-time against Rutgers, but has won two in a row and three of the last five.
- Tonight's victory was the 499th of head coach Anthony Bozzella's career. He needs just one more to reach the remarkable milestone of 500.
- The Pirates improve to 119-46 in Walsh Gym during the Bozzella era. Furthermore, the Pirates are now 60-12 against non-conference opponents at home.
- Baines collected her fifth career 20-point game.
- Gray has now reached double-figures in scoring for 10 straight games dating back to last season for Texas Southern.
- Davis collected 10 rebounds for the 59th time in her career and first time at Seton Hall.
- Seton Hall connected on a season-high 10 three-pointers.
- The Hall's average margin of victory in its three wins so far this year is 33.3 points per game.
