With all due respect to the disgrace that was and is human trafficking and slavery, I'm going to come down on the side of "no" on this one. The city of SF wants to give $5M per person to those whose ancestors were the victims of slavery. I expect that from those nut jobs, but I thought NJ was better than that. Apparently, it's something that our representatives are being persuaded to consider. https://www.njleg.state.nj.us/bill-search/2022/A938/bill-text?f=A1000&n=938_I1

Since my family didn't come here until well after abolition, and never owned slaves, I don't feel compelled to have to pay into any kind of reparation fund. If this somehow comes to fruition, I may be the first arrested for deducting and withholding that portion of my taxes.

This is all virtue signaling political BS. Nothing will ever come of these proposals.

Don't be so sure. This is a state with overwhelming support for the Democratic party, a kooky governor and equally kooky legislators - at least those who wrote and sponsored this bill.

It will only accelerate the exodus of the populace. Why would anyone in the top 5% of earners (those who will pay), want to have their wallets drained? Record homelessness and crime…they get what they deserve.

I think some clowns will argue for defunding police and using those funds to pay reparation.

thats absurd. repararions only swings the pendulum.

One of the most divisive, unjust things you could ever do. Punish hard working people who had absolutely nothing to do with the wrongs of 150+ years ago.

I am so sick of this stuff. America keeps advancing and is more free, fair and just than ever before. Stop complaining and go out and earn a living. Anyone can do it.

Because the new top 5% earners are not your father's millionaires. Somerset County flipped! Bedminster, Bernardsville, Far Hills! They live in all-white enclaves, and are safe, and can afford to pay taxes to support the social justice issues they vote for.

It's just disgraceful.

But if I identify as African-American?????

I disagree. People with money don’t like it taken from them. I know so many people in NJ and NY now doing the six months and a day in FL. Still have a house in NJ but don’t spend most of their time.

Check out some of the towns that voted for Murphy, who pledged to take it from them.

I get that but has any state passed any reparation legislation. There’s always going to be stupid legislators and stupid voters.

This bill only proposes a committee to "study" it, but they will have officially opened the door if this passes. People need to speak up.

....including public meetings in north, central and south Jersey. Imagine what those are going to be like.

Is there any talk of reparations for those of us who lost family members fighting for the north against slavery? Slavery was a disgusting part of our country's history. No one ever brings up the thousands of white people who lost their lives fighting against slavery and the south.

Nonsense, SHUMatt. All white people are slave owners, oppressors, racists, or any combination of those. At least according to the idiots who put forth this bill.

The bill is only a study. I can't imagine it goes anywhere. These committees are just foolish.

btw anybody going to talk about the $5m PER PERSON. think about that. thays making 17% of the country into an ultra high net worth individual.

A Governor so divorced from reality that he actually tries to compares his performance and his state to the guy in Florida, when CA is losing people in droves because of its policies, and Florida is one of the states gaining them.

Reparations may be propsed to address all the problems black men have caused by fathering children and then disappearing from their lives and the circle of poverty and resulting crime continues. If reparations could somehow address this problem a lot if people would be for it..Unfortunately it can’t so we still have a hopeless segrment of our society.

The one topic on slaver our country never touches is who sold the slaves to us. What if some of today's African Americans ancestors actually sold slaves to the US, do they get money too?

It's a horrible legacy and yes the Africans sold slaves and slavery was deeply ingrained in their culture. The writer of this story does not want her relatives to be judged by what was considered normal way back then and I believe most Americans feel the same way. My relatives did not come here until the early 1900s and by all accounts had nothing to do with slavery. Doesn't make me better than anyone else but why would I want to pay for a wrong that happened hundreds of years ago? I don't get it? And after reparations are made will the people receiving the money be happy or will they want more?

It's all a money grab for basically doing nothing...and you're right; they will just want more money.
