SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) set the all-time career scoring record for the Seton Hall women's basketball team in a crucial 60-50 victory over Villanova on Sunday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. Richardson-Smith finished with a game-high 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds for The Hall (18-7, 8-6 BIG EAST) as the Pirates earned a split of the regular seasons series with the Wildcats (16-10, 9-6 BIG EAST).
In support of Richardson-Smith, Aleesha Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished with 16 points and a career-high eight rebounds. The Pirates turned a dominant performance inside, out-rebounding the Wildcats 48-27 and out-scoring them 34-4 in the paint and 18-4 in second-chance points. Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) led the charge on the glass with 11 rebounds and five Pirates grabbed at least four boards.
The Pirates led by a point after a quarter and took an eight-point lead to the half, but Villanova stormed back and went ahead midway through the third quarter. The teams traded leads into the fourth frame, with VU taking a 46-44 lead with 7:06 to play. The Hall answered with an 8-0 run to pull ahead by six, with Richardson-Smith setting the scoring record at 4:35 with a put-back lay-in during the run. Overall, the Pirates scored 16 of the final 20 points of the contest to pull off the victory.
Turning Point
The Pirates opened the fourth quarter with a Jordan Molyneaux (Denver, Colo.) to take a six-point lead, but Villanova answered with back-to-back 3-pointers before a Samantha Wilkes basket gave the Wildcats a two-point. After nearly two minutes without a score, Claire Lundberg (Andover, Minn.) drilled a pull-up jumper to tie the contest at 46-all. Gordon hit a lay-up on the next possession and was fouled, with Richardson-Smith grabbing the offensive board on her free throw attempt for her record-setting lay-in. The Lundberg jumped began a 16-4 run to close out the contest.
