Romaro Gill, well traveled, sports loving and oh yeah, 7 feet 2 inches tall.
Gill grew up in St. Thomas, Jamaica one of 5 siblings. There he played cricket and soccer as most boys his age do. But unlike most boys Gill experienced an early growth spurt that eventually brought him to his present day height in excess of 7 feet tall.
That height awkward at first did allow Gill to pursue his dream of coming to America as it enabled him to earn a scholarship in a new sport, basketball, as Vincennes University a junior college in St, Vincennes, IN tendered the young man a two year free ride with the hope for Gill that a D1 offer would then follow.
It did and Gill came to South Orange after completing his eligibility on May 2, 2017. A commitment that would include a redshirt year as the 7-2 center needed to refine his game and work on both his skill set and body.
The year proved a positive experience for Gill as not only did he have to learn to adapt his game to the more physical Big East, but he did so going up against Seton Hall's All American center Angel Delgado. Often when asked how difficult Delgado made it for him in practice every day, Gill not lacking in confidence yet always with a smile on his face simply said we make it difficult for each other. A fact made clear the following season highlighted in part by these performances,
a career-high five blocked shots in a huge 12-minute appearance to help the Pirates beat Rutgers in the Garden State Hardwood Classic.
his first career start vs Maryland helping the Hall to an upset victory while playing 24 minutes contributing six points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.
coming off the bench at Xavier with four points, five rebounds, four blocks, and three steals, most of them coming in the second half of the comeback victory.
blocked a shot as time expired to preserve the Pirates' two-point victory over the Providence Friars.
There were other highlights as well in a surprising season for a player few expected to have much of an impact in South Orange.
Still there were bumps in he road for Gill. Most on the offensive side of the court where his game consisted of little more than ally oop dunks facilitated by his teammates.
There was also the problem of when to play Ro. His interior defense stifled strong opponents in the paint, but when forced to match up away from the key Gill struggled and struggled badly. An issue playing for a coach that demands superior man to man defense.
In short Gill gave more to the Pirates than most anticipated becoming a vital roster piece in Kevin Willard's 'Ro' tation. But with that said his game still needs much refinement as his lateral movement is lacking, his reflexes due to his gargantuan size a little slow and his offense nearly non existent away form the basket.
Clearly Gill's bread is buttered inside the paint on defense, but for him to maximize both his size and thus potential Romaro must continue to put in long fours in the gym. Something he has been doing working with his now eligible and fellow 7 footer Ikey Obiagu, a transfer from Florida State.
The Hall hopes that season 2 in Pirate nation will be a special one for both Gill and the team as they both build upon what was stared in 2018/19. A season of individual mixed reviews that earned the young man from Jamaica a solid C.
