any idea which rating means more to the selection committee ? Everyone talking about rpi right now but in Presser about a month or so ago Willard mentioned he studies all that goes into kenpom as if it was a significant item to committee ( my words). Seems Shu has better kenpom- 33 vs 38.

Selection criteria
The Rating Percentage Index (RPI) is one of many factors used by NCAA sports committees when evaluating team selection, seeding and bracketing.

The basic RPI consists of a team’s Division I winning percentage (25 percent weight), its opponents’ winning percentage (50 percent weight) and its opponents opponents’ winning percentage (25 percent weight). The RPI is one of many factors the committees use for selecting and seeding teams.

Other criteria the committee considers in the selections process are:
  • Rankings by regional advisory committees of coaches;
  • Division I record;
  • Non-conference record;
  • Non-conference RPI;
  • Conference record;
  • Road record;
  • Injuries to key players;
  • Other computer rankings (Sagarin, KenPom, etc.);
  • Special circumstances that may have affected a team‘s performance in certain games, such as weather-related travel difficulties;
  • Record against other teams that are under consideration;
  • Record against teams that are in the tournament field.

One of the standards that seems to have been relegated to the sidelines is a team's record in February and March , the last 10 games or so. I can remember that being discussed consistently during PJ's tenure on the various sports media outlets as a factor in the committee's selection process but not currently.

There is no way the selection committee uses Kenpom or BPI. Does anyone really think they care about pace of play and offensive efffiency? Every committee member ever interviewed has always mentions who you played, who you beat and where did you play them. VA Tech, PC, SMU, Penn State and us all found out the hard way over the years.

TomD82 dropping knowledge as usual. Have to agree, part. since BPI is a mare thing from ESPN just so they have some branded measure of their own. KenPom is at least a universal metric everyone respects, although it might not be used by the selection committee

Am I missing something? Doesn't SPK's post via the NCAA website explicitly mention KenPom as "other criteria" the committee considers?

The Committee doesn't act like a round table committee per se, especially initially, as each committee member gets a ballot where each one lists its at-large selections in order. These are tallied, all teams that receive a certain amount of votes are in, then discussion b gins for any slots still to filled.

RPI is the committe's tool. But it is not for the rpi rank, but rather to categorize your opponents (ie, top 25, top 100, etc)

Kenpom and sagarin are new to the selection room. Not sure how they are used

Record in last ten games has not been a factor for several years now.

Last ten games used to be a big deal.

When nova tanked down the stretch in 2011 losing their last half dozen they weren't punished for it.

it was about 2008'ish if I recall when they did away with it. They changed the RPI in 2006 I believe to include the weighted road/home away portion of the rpi.

Wasn't that the year VU was placed in the 8-9 game and lost to GMU? They did play a very good schedule that year,but in effect wre punished for their losing streak.

They were seeded accordingly.

People were saying they would miss the dance due to their finish, but that was one of the first years that last 10 games was removed from the criteria, so they were seeded without regard to their losing streak.

They had a 44 rpi that yr and most mock brackets had them a double digit seed. The 8 seed was sort of proof that last ten games didn't matter anymore.

I think (I could be wrong) that was the year there was a lot of fighting within the team. Specifically between Corey fisher and Scottie Reynolds? Rumor was it was over scotties girlfriend but I have no idea if there is any truth to that.

Personally I think it should be used.

what happens when you play an uneven confernce schedule? In my opinion our first 9 in conference was a tougher stretch than the back 9. we ran our gauntlet early in the season. It could just as easily been at the end. I think it's most fair to judge the season as a whole.

Scottie graduated in 2010.

The team I am referencing was the 2011 team that was ranked as high as 6 but really went down hill, and then followed up with a complete disaster in 2012, which led to a gutting of the team and rebuild that worked out pretty well as they made the dance in 2013. Maalik Wayns and Dom Cheek were allergic to defense and there was no chemistry in that unit.

It's funny that jay wrights most heralded recruiting class, 2009, ended up being the worst one in terms of results. Wayns and cheek were McDonald's all americans, and yarou was rated just as high, with another top 50 kid in armwood. Only yarou finished all four years as armwood transferred and Wayne's and cheeks got told to go pro.

I think SPK is right it should be used, but clearly they have said they look at the whole body of work. I think the only time an uneven schedule comes into play is when there is an unbalanced schedule like the old BE when you could not play SU and UC in a particular season.

Whether they admit to looking at how well teams are doing down the stretch or not, they look at it for sure. They have to.

You have to look at how teams are playing over the final month because you're trying to put together the best field possible and most competitive.

KenPom, RPI, all of its m when you're arguing for a particular team. KP is great in that regard because it drills a bit past the obvious to how competitive a team truly is.

You guys can claim that they look at recent performance all you want. The comittee has specifically said they don't. And their selection and seeding since they changed this criteria back up their statement.
