FWIW there is a huge difference between the focus of the players and the focus of the message board fans.

Under no circumstance should the the focus of the players be on anything other than their next game. One missed FT or one extra Turnover could mean the difference in a win or a loss.

That said, the fans do not need to be so focused. If we fans get distracted it doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

Therefore, there is no harm and only "analytical" satisfaction in understanding the nuances of RPI, etc.

While what the players do will determine whether the Hall goes to the "Big Dance", it is also what our opponents do that will help determine the Pirates' seat (or seed) at said "Big Dance".

So IMHO the precautions against losing focus can only stifle our "analytical" fans' enjoyment.

EXCEPT of course rooting for SCRUNJ .

I heard about the site which shows you how different games can effect your RPI, but Ive never seen it before. thanks for posting

It's not brain surgery to figure out to win is nice, but to win and have a bunch of RPI factors go our way is even better. somebody has to win those other games, it might as well be the team that helps SHU the most. My apologies to all for attempting to make sense.

snaketom I agree with you completely but it is still better for the SHU resume if our opponents can get as high as possible in the RPI to even better our seeding for the NCAA Tournament.

When the Pirates win as they did tonight everything else is secondary.

+1. I really don't want to care what other teams are doing.
Get to 10 wins. .500 ball from here on out is all we need.

Control what you can control and don't worry about what our OOC opponents are doing. What we control is the effort and results of each future BE opponent we face and that means winning as many games as we can and get to the point where we have a resume good enough to get a bid. To me that means winning a minimum of 10 BE games and what the results of our OOC schedule and who the teams were can't be changed and how they will effect our resume is out of our control. We control our own destiny, a bid is there for the taking and if we don't get it then it's a missed opportunity and no excuses. If we do get it then all the plaudits the team, players and staff receive are more then well deserved because we earned it.

It's important to focus on what's in your control, but I don't agree that we shouldn't care what other teams are doing. A few RPI points may ultimately be the difference (in the committee's mind) between a play-in game and better match-up. I wouldn't obsess over it, but why shouldn't we care to improve our tourney resume in all areas? Everything is relative - when our closest competition loses, it's our gain.

Agreed! It is not a matter of "worrying" what our OOC opponents do, but the RPI gives me a reason to "root" for or against a few of the legion teams on TV all of the time. Isn't that what fans do? To some of us fans such small "wins" can add a little spice to enhance a good --- or overwhelm a bad ---- basketball repast.

The RPI of our opponents is important. There is a lot of weight put on your out of conference schedule. The higher those opponents can get the better for SHU and will help us get a better seed in the Tournament.

As far as the RPI is concerned it really does not matter if Rutgers wins or loses as there is no way that our game with them will ever count as a "quality win".

Snaketom Once again I agree with you completely.

BUT

It does matter if Georgia can get hot and get into the top 50.

It does matter if Providence and Wichita State can get to the top 25.

It does matter if Long Beach State and Ole Miss can stay in the top 100.

It does matter if George Washington can finish in the top 50.

It does matter if Creighton and Marquette can get into the top 100

Tact: I do not disagree with you at all. All I'm saying is that we must win first before any of the other teams results matter. Personally I won't start looking at the other teams until we have won our 20th game. But that's just me.

SHU is getting to 20 wins this year. I believe they finish with more than that.

The way they are playing it looks like 21-9 heading into big east tourney...get two wins...23-10 and solid 6-9 seed...6 seed with no loss to DePaul or St. John and beating Xavier.

Fair enough, it's just been too many years since our name has show up on selection Sunday. I don't want to go 9-9 and have to worry about our ooc opponents. I agree that we want the best seed possible, but if we get to 10 wins I would be thrilled!
