SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) matched her career-high with 20 kills as the Seton Hall women’s volleyball team downed St. John’s, 3-1 (25-15, 17-25, 25-20, 27-25), on Friday.

Seton Hall (13-16, 7-10) dominated the Red Storm in set one, winning 25-15, but St. John’s was equally as impressive in set two, tying the match with a 25-17 victory.

Turning Point:
Trailing 8-7 in set three, the Pirates went on a 9-2 run to take a commanding 16-10 advantage. St. John’s cut the lead to 19-17, but The Hall scored four of the next five points to pad its lead. A kill by Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.), put the Pirates in set point, 24-20, and the ensuing kill by Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.), won the set for The Hall.

Set four was clearly the closest of the match with the teams combining for seven ties and three lead changes. Again, the Pirates found themselves down early, but rallied with a big run. Trailing 8-5, The Hall went on an 11-2 run to take a 16-10 advantage. The Red Storm rallied however, and pulled even with the Pirates at 19. With the scored tied at 21, St. John’s scored three of the next four points to earn set point at 24-22. But the Pirates bounced back, and consecutive kills by Hansen and Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) tied the set at 24. The Red Storm again moved into set point, 25-24, but The Hall scored the final three points of the set, to win in epic fashion, 27-25.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) recorded 12 kills in a strong Senior Night effort as the Seton Hall women’s volleyball team swept Providence, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-22), on Saturday to complete the 2015 season.

Hansen also had a team-best .391 attack percentage, six digs and two aces to complete her collegiate career. Sara Connell (Dousman, Wis.) and Kacey Richards (Macedon, N.Y.) also played all three sets and saw their Pirate careers come to an end in winning style.

Seton Hall (14-16, 8-10) charged out of the gate, scoring five of the first six points of the first set. After the Friars cut the lead to 6-4, the Pirates went on a 9-1 run, capped by a Hansen kill to take a commanding 15-5 advantage and prompt a Providence timeout. From there, PC never got closer than five points as Seton Hall cruised to a 25-18 victory.

Set two started very similarly to set one as Seton Hall, aided by back-to-back service aces by Hansen, scored the first five points. The Pirates led for most of the set, but Providence methodically chipped away and eventually used a 7-2 run to take a 20-19 advantage. Trailing 21-20, The Hall scored four straight points to gain set point, 24-21. Three points later, a kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Pirates a 25-23 set two win.

After a close start, Seton Hall finally started to pull away from Providence mid-way through set three. A Friar attack error gave the Pirates a 15-10 lead. Providence cut the lead to just two points late, 24-22, but Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) ended the match with a kill.

Seton Hall (13-16, 7-10) dominated the Red Storm in set one, winning 25-15, but St. John’s was equally as impressive in set two, tying the match with a 25-17 victory.

Notes & Numbers:
    • Hansen finishes her career with 1,092 career kills, eighth-most in Seton Hall history, and 481 blocks, third-most ever.
    • Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) had 15 digs tonight, giving her 583 for the season, the fifth-highest single-season total in Seton Hall history.

    • Seton Hall improves to 6-9 this season in three-set matches.
    • The Pirates improve to 11-15 all-time against the Friars.
  • With the victory and St. John’s loss to Villanova, Seton Hall claims fifth place in the final BIG EAST standings. The Pirates were predicted to finish sixth in the preseason.

The program did pretty well in a rebuilding year and with a large number of freshman on its roster the base is there to succeed. With three seniors on the team adding size ( just like WBB ) becomes important going forward.

Agreed that this year turned out to be a rebuilding year. The BigEast is a solid mid-major
conference. Seton Hall can certainly be in that group. Coach Yaeger is worth keeping and
a coach that can keep SHU in the argument.

They lost a couple of matches that just slipped away this season and it distorted their record. The
inexperience was an issue and they had a tough time stemming the tide when things were going bad.

When you look at the really top programs I'd say the difference is that Seton Hall can't match the power
on the frontline. Hopefully, they can add some length and blend them in with the good players they already
have on the roster.

Agree completely NYC . As to adding talent to the frontline it might be time to think outside the box and look at foreign players especially in those counties where women's VB is big. Certainly not an easy task and not sure if the budget would allow the staff to look at the foreign market but you lose nothing by thinking about it.
