LAST GAME
The Pirates rallied from a 10-point deficit late in the third quarter to upset previously unbeaten Georgia, 86-80, in the Paradise Jam finale on Saturday in St. Thomas.
Although Seton Hall, Georgia and VCU all finished with 2-1 records in the Paradise Jam, the tournament title went to Georgia by virtue of a net points tie-breaker. The Pirates lost to VCU by one and beat Georgia by six, so they finished with a +5. Georgia lost to Seton Hall by six, but defeated VCU by 14 for a +8.
Down 70-68, the Pirates went on a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter that gave them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
For a second straight night, senior Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) was brilliant for The Hall. Named to the Paradise Jam All-Tournament Team, she finished with game-highs of 23 points and nine assists. Sidney Cooks (Kenosha, Wis.) had 18 points, while both Sha’Lynn Hagans (Manassas, Va.) and Mya Bembry (West Orange, N.J.) both also reached double-figures in scoring with 12 and 10 points respectively.

LAST YEAR AGAINST XAVIER
Friday’s contest will be the 20th meeting all-time between Seton Hall and Xavier. The Pirates have dominated the all-time series, winning 16 of the prior 19 contests. Seton Hall has now won six straight games against Xavier after sweeping the 2021-22 season series.
On Feb. 4 at Walsh Gym, five Pirates scored at least 14 points, and The Hall outlasted Xavier in an offensive shootout, 91-86. Andra Espinoza-Hunter led the Pirates in scoring with 20 points to go with five assists and three rebounds. Sidney Cooks (Kenosha, Wis.) notched a double-double with 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting and a team-high 10 rebounds. Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.), Mya Jackson and Curtessia Dean scored 16, 15 and 14 points respectively.
In the regular season finale, three Pirates scored at least 18 points and Park-Lane broke the BIG EAST single-season assist record as The Hall defeated Xavier, 74-53. Park-Lane finished with 13 assists, which set a new BIG EAST single-season record at 152. Cooks collected a double-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
SCOUTING XAVIER
Xavier is coming off a 9-21 season in 2021-22, which includes a 4-16 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. After falling to the Pirates in the regular season finale, their season came to an end with a 76-69 loss to St. John’s in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament.
This year, the Musketeers have a new look as their top two-scorers transferred to teams in the BIG EAST with Nia Clark heading to Marquette and the Pirates acquiring Kae Satterfield. Xavier was picked to finish last in the 11-team league according to the preseason coaches’ poll. Xavier has flipped the script however, winning six of their first seven games. Their first loss of the 2022-23 campaign came on Friday in their BIG EAST opener against No. 16 Creighton, a 57-51 loss. Currently, three Musketeers, Mackayla Scarlett, Taylor Smith and Fernanda Ovalle, are averaging at least 12.0 points per game. Xavier has captured the first three BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors, with the last two going to Ovalle.
