BOX SCORE
MASON, OHIO – Junior
Noah Thompson (Frisco, Texas) threw a complete game, but the Seton Hall baseball team dropped a pitchers' duel to Xavier, 2-1, and was eliminated from the 2019 BIG EAST Championship on Friday.
The loss closes out the 2019 season for Seton Hall, which played every game away from Owen T. Carroll Field during renovations, and lost its beloved patriarch,
Mike Sheppard, Sr., mid-season. Still, the Pirates managed a final record of 25-28.
Thompson tossed all eight innings for Seton Hall, scattering just three hits. Two of the hits however, were solo home runs. He also struck out five batters and walked three.
Offensively, the Pirates mustered just three hits. Sophomore
Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) reached base a team-best three times, going 1-for-2 with two hit-by-pitches and a solo home run in the ninth inning.
What Happened:
Seton Hall trailed from the very start as Xavier leadoff man Conor Grammes belted Thompson's third pitch over the left field fence. Thompson however, settled down and engaged in a pitchers' duel for the next three innings with Grammes, who was also Xavier's starting pitcher. Thompson retired 12 straight Musketeers until Chris Givins led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to put them up, 2-0.
The Hall wasn't without its share of offensive opportunities. In the top of the sixth inning, Seton Hall loaded the bases, but
Christian Del Castillo (Miami, Fla.) popped up a 3-1 pitch, which ended the inning. In the top of the sixth, sophomore
Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) doubled to lead off, but Steve
Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) popped up,
Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) struck out and
Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) chopped out to short.
Dana belted a solo home run to lead off the ninth inning, but Xavier's Lane Framm came in and got the final three outs to close out the game.
Inside the Numbers:
- Both teams recorded three hits, two double plays and neither committed an error.

- Hood reached base twice with a double and a walk.
- Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) reached base twice with a single and a walk.
- Seton Hall left seven men on base, while the Musketeers left only two.

- Seton Hall falls to 11-9 all-time against the Musketeers.
- With the loss, Seton Hall drops to 37-44 all-time in BIG EAST Championship play.
- With a single today, Shedler-McAvoy has now hit safely in 22 of the last 23 games. He'll also enter the 2020 season with a 10-game hit streak.
- Dana's home run today is his eighth of the season, which is a new season-high. His eight home runs are the most in a single-season since Chris Affinito hit nine in 2009.
- Today is the 25th time this season that the Pirates haven't committed an error in a game.
- Seton Hall's lone pitched complete game of the season, came in its 53rd and final game by Thompson. The Pirates didn't have a complete game in all of 2018 either.
