PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. – The Seton Hall baseball team rallied from a 3-0 sixth inning deficit to edge Indiana, 6-4, in 10 innings, on Saturday at the Snowbird Classic to conclude its Spring Break trip.
In a wild, back-and-forth affair, the Pirates’ offense erupted for a season-high 14 hits, three of which came in a three-run seventh inning that gave The Hall a 4-3 lead.
With victory seemingly in its clutches, Seton Hall held its one-run lead up until there was one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. Indiana’s Austin Cangelosi hit a one-out triple and pinch hitter Scotty Bradley followed with a single to plate Cangelosi with the tying run. With two outs and winning run just 90 feet away, reliever
Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) was able to get the third out on a force play at second base to send the game into extra innings.
Turning Point:
In the top of the 10th inning, sophomore
Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) led off with a double, and freshman
Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) drew a walk to put two runners on base with no outs. Junior
Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) followed with a perfect sacrifice bunt, and in a rush to get the out at first, Indiana third baseman threw wide of first base. Caputo was safe, Santorelli advanced to third base and Alescio scored the go-ahead run.
Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) then put down a bunt, and the safety squeeze allowed Santorelli to score with the insurance run.
Inside the Numbers:
- Pacillo pitched a scoreless ninth and earned the victory by getting the final five outs. He improves to 2-0.
- Caputo and Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) each reached base four times today. Caputo went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a sacrifice, while Poduslenko went 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored and three walks.
- Caputo, Alescio, Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) and Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) had three hits apiece.
- Sophomore Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.) struggled early in his first start, but settled down to pitch 5.0 innings with three earned runs, while striking out five and walking one in a no decision.
- Senior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) extended his team-best hitting streak to seven games.
- Seton Hall hit a season-high four doubles.
- The Pirates combined to strike out 11 Indiana batters, while walking only one. Both teams turned two double-plays.
