Lawrence, Kan. — Junior Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied for the game-high with a season-best 17 points and senior Tyrese Samuel (Montreal, Quebec) added 16 points but the Seton Hall men's basketball team ultimately fell to No. 9 Kansas, 91-65, on Thursday evening.

Seton Hall (4-4) nearly trailed by single digits going into halftime but the defending national champions proved to be too much in the second half.

How It Happened

Richmond scored the Pirates' first field goal of the game and it gave them an early 3-2 lead. Kansas jumped out to a nine-point lead, 23-14, but Richmond went on a 5-0 run by himself that cut the deficit to five. A Samuel layup plus the free throw made it a five-point game again with 6:36 to play in the half but an 8-0 run by the Jayhawks gave them their largest lead of contest at 13, 34-21. Despite the Pirates trimming their lead to nine, a Kansas three with 15 seconds left before halftime pushed its lead back to double-digits, 40-29.

The second stanza was all Jayhawks. Junior Femi Odukale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made one of two free throws that made it a 10-point contest but Kansas proceeded to go on a 10-1 run that extended their lead to 19, 50-31, and they never relinquished.

  • Seton Hall was 4-of-19 from deep, with all four of their three-balls coming in the second half.
  • The Pirates shot 44 percent for the game (21-of-48) but allowed Kansas to shoot at a 57 percent clip.
  • Seton Hall had a slight edge in second chance points 10-9.
  • 10 of the 11 Pirates that made the trip got into the game.
