LAST GAME

Senior Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) erupted for a game-high 30 points and Sidney Cooks (Kenosha, Wis.) had a double-double as the Pirates defeated St. Joseph’s in the opening round of the 2023 WNIT on Thursday.

The Pirates out-scored St. Joseph’s 31-13 in the first quarter, which provided the catalyst for the victory. The Hawks chipped away over the final three quarters, and cut their deficit to just two late in the fourth, but The Hall was able to make big stops defensively when it needed to.

Park-Lane was brilliant early, scoring 19 of her game-high 30 points in the first quarter alone, to set Seton Hall’s single-quarter scoring record. She was 7-for-16 for the game, including 4-for-6 from three-point range and 12-for-15 from the free-throw line. Her 30 points ties Seton Hall’s scoring record for points in an NCAA or WNIT contest.

Seton Hall All-Time vs. the Orange: Pirates lead, 28-25

Last Meeting:

Syracuse 65, Seton Hall 34 (F) – January 30, 2013 (Carrier Dome)

AGAINST SYRACUSE

Seton Hall and Syracuse were two of the seven original BIG EAST programs when the conference began in 1979. The Orange left the conference for the Atlantic Coast Conference after the 2012-13 season. While together, Seton Hall held a slim 28-25 edge over the Orange. The teams, however, haven’t played since Syracuse left. The most recent meeting was a 65-34 rout of the Pirates at the Carrier Dome on Jan. 30, 2015.

Despite having a lead in the all-time series, Seton Hall has lost the last six games against Syracuse.

SCOUTING SYRACUSE

The Orange earned the ACC’s automatic bid to the WNIT after finishing with an 18-12 final regular season record. They posted a 15-3 record at the JMA Wireless Dome this season, their most home wins in a season since the 2010-11 season. Fortunately for the Pirates, they catch the Orange on the road where they were just 4-8 this year.

Felisha Legette-Jack becomes the first coach in Syracuse women's basketball history to lead her team to the postseason in their first year.

Syracuse senior guard Dyaisha Fair was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) First Team and All-Defensive Team. Fair led the ACC in total steals (71) and is second in the league in scoring this season with 19.9 points per game.

After closing the regular season with a pair of victories, Syracuse was bounced from the ACC Tournament with an 83-58 first-round loss to NC State. On Wednesday, the Orange opened the WNIT with a convincing 84-56 victory over Kent State at the Dome. Fair had a team-high 24 points, while Dariauna Lewis had 17 points and 12 rebounds.

UP NEXTIf Seton Hall defeats Syracuse, the Pirates will advance to the Super 16 and face either Fordham or Columbia, both teams The Hall has already faced this season. The location and date are still undetermined. Super 16 games are possible between March 22-24.

SHU beat Fordham back in December but Lost to Columbia in November, after squeaking by them in the
WNIT last year. So just concentrate on beating Syracuse on Monday. go Pirates

At a quick glance this Syracuse team looks to be more athletic and have more length than most of the teams that the Pirates have faced this season. Hopefully, Cooks and Baines can offset some of that. Protecting the defensive boards could be important in this contest preventing second chance points. LPL looks to be back to form recently. She's playing very well and more confident in her shot. The team is playing better defense recently, They do tend to overhelp and drift away from the person they are covering allowing too many quality shots. Should be a good game.
