SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Seton Hall women's basketball team kicks off the 2015-16 campaign on Friday morning against the Bryant Bulldogs of the Northeast Conference. Tip-off at historic Walsh Gymnasium is set for 11 a.m. as part of Kids Day Presented by: Refuel by Chocolate Milk. The contest can be seen on the Pirate Sports Network with Jon Schaeffer, Chris Pierre-Louis and Cory Pontarollo on the call and heard on WSOU, 89.5 FM.
The Pirates are looking to build on their program-record 28-win season a year ago, as reigning BIG EAST Coach of the Year Anthony Bozzella ('89) led The Hall to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 20 years. Seton Hall went 15-3 in BIG EAST play to clinch a share of the regular season title and earn the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament for the first time in program history.
Bryant is also coming off a championship season, as the Bulldogs went 22-9 overall with a 14-4 mark in the NEC to clinch a share of the regular season league title. Bryant returns four starters that averaged double figures last season, headed by NEC Player of the Year candidate Breanna Rucker who went for 16.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game a season ago.
The Hall will be led by its own league Player of the Year candidate, as Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) returns and was selected as a unanimous preseason All-BIG EAST choice last monht. Richardson-Smith led the Pirates with 17.8 points per game last season and added 6.8 rebounds per contest. She enters her senior season ranked ninth on The Hall's all-time scoring list with 1,321 career points and holds the program record with 194 3-pointers in her career.
In support of Richardson-Smith, Tiffany Jones is The Hall's second-leading returner in points (7.0) and rebounds (5.8) after playing in 21 games off the bench last season. In an exhibition contest against Philadelphia on Nov. 7, Jones led the Pirates with 16 points and eight rebounds as The Hall cruised to a 71-47 victory.
In the backcourt, The Hall will turn to Aleesha Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.) to fill the void left by the graduation of Honorable Mention All-Americans Ka-Deidre Simmons and Daisha Simmons. Powell was an All-MAAC performer at Iona before sitting out last season as a transfer at SHU, while Richardson was a 2011 WBCA High School All-American who helped Florida State to an Elite Eight last season.
The Pirates have been excellent in Walsh Gym under Bozzella, going 17-1 last season to run their overall record at home in two seasons to 32-6. Bozzella has also seen tremendous non-conference success, with a 25-7 record in non-league games during his first two years at the helm.
Following the Bryant contest, the Pirates host a pair of in-state rivals that reached the NCAA Tournament a season ago. Rutgers visits Walsh on Nov. 16 for an NCAA Tournament rematch, before Princeton visits on Nov. 19 after going 30-0 in the 2014-15 regular season. Both contests are set to tip at 7 p.m. on FS2.
