South Orange, N.J. - Following a 2-1 weekend at the Sugar Land Classic, the Seton Hall baseball team will head West for its Spring Break trip, starting with a four-game series against Cal Baptist that will commence on Friday, March 3, at 9 p.m. Eastern in Riverside, Calif.

The Pirates (3-3) have wins over No. 12 North Carolina, Houston Christian and New Mexico State to start the season. This will be Seton Hall's first meeting with the Lancers in program history. Seton Hall has started the following three pitchers the last two weekends, Friday through Sunday: RHP Brennan O'Neill (Morristown, N.J.), RHP Daniel Frontera (Red Bank, N.J.) and LHP John Downing (New Hyde Park, N.Y.).

News & Notes
  • Seton Hall head coach Rob Sheppard sits at 491 career victories entering the weekend.
  • Redshirt junior Devin Hack has three hits this season and has 99 hits for his career.
  • Redshirt sophomore Cole Hansen (Skillman, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this past week after tossing 5.1 innings of scoreless relief and striking out a career-high four batters in the 9-3 win over New Mexico State on Sunday.
  • Its the second conference honor for Seton Hall this season following graduate student Nick Payero (Monroe, N.J.) and his BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week accolade the first weekend after earning the win on the mound against No. 12 North Carolina on opening day.
  • Through six games, the Pirates have three games where they have tallied double-digit hits as a team, something that took 12 games last season.
  • The Pirates have scored seven or more runs in three games this season, a benchmark that took until the 21st game last season for The Hall to reach.
  • Seton Hall has scored first in four of its six this season and it's happened in all three of its victories.

An important trip for the baseball team. The pitchers have to get their control in line or it could be a long season. The hitting is definitely improved but they still strikeout too much. As a group they are capable of putting up runs.

Box Score

Riverside, Calif. - Despite jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning, the Seton Hall baseball team could not hold on to its early advantage as the Pirates dropped the series opener to Cal Baptist, 13-4, on Friday evening.

Graduate student Brennan O'Neill (Morristown, N.J.) had a season-high six strikeouts but took the loss for the Pirates (3-4). Junior Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) had an RBI single and sophomore Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) continued his strong start to the season with a two-run double. Graduate student Alex Nicolosi (Stony Point, N.Y.) struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief work.

How It Happened

The Pirates got on the board first for the third consecutive game in the top of the third inning. With one on, junior Mark McNelly (Limerick, Pa.) moved graduate student Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sylvester drove Clyde in for the game's first run on an RBI single through the right side. There were two on and one out for D'Amico who sent a 3-0 pitch to the wall in right field that cleared the bases and extended Seton Hall's lead to 3-0. An RBI groundout from junior Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) made 4-0 in favor of the Pirates.

Cal Baptist wasted no time climbing back into the game as they pushed across three runs in the home half of the third and seven more runs in the fourth to take a commanding 10-4 lead. With the Lancers leading 13-4 in the ninth, the Pirates showed some life. After freshman Nick Ferri (Flemington, N.J.) scored on a passed ball, an RBI single by Clyde and a sac fly RBI from McNelly further chipped into the deficit making it 13-7, but it wouldn't be enough as The Hall couldn't extend the game.

News & Notes
  • Redshirt junior Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) registered his 100th career hit on a base hit in the seventh inning.
  • D'Amico now has a team-best eight RBI on the season.
  • Sylvester has tallied eight hits early in the season, the most on the team.
  • O'Neill's six strikeouts is a person best this season and the most this season by a Seton Hall pitcher.
  • Seton Hall pitchers struck out 13 Lancers, a season high.
  • Ferri made his second career appearance as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh where he drew a walk.

Riverside, Calif. - Sophomore Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass) had an RBI single for his team-leading ninth RBI of the season and the Seton Hall pitching staff allowed only three earned runs but the Pirates couldn't break through offensively in a 4-3 loss to Cal Baptist on Saturday evening.

Sophomore Daniel Frontera (Red Bank, N.J.) went 4.1 innings with three strikeouts in his third start of the season. Freshman Ryan Reich (Sellinsgrove, Pa.) struck out a pair of batters in relief and junior Jay Allmer (Asheville, N.C.) posted three Ks in two innings of work.

How It Happened

Junior Mark McNelly (Limerick, Pa.) led off the top of the third with a double to left center and moved to third with one out on a passed ball. With two down, D'Amico turned on a 1-2 pitch down the left field line and it brought McNelly home, giving Seton Hall a 1-0 lead. Frontera worked a scoreless third and recorded a strikeout for the first out of the fourth before allowing a solo home run that knotted up the score at 1-1.

The Lancers pushed two more runs across in the fifth on a two-run home run but Reich worked a scoreless sixth and the Pirate bats got something going in the top of the seventh. Consecutive singles by junior Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) and graduate student Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.), the latter on a bunt single, got the inning started. Freshman Nick Ferri (Flemington, N.J.) was the next batter and he put the ball in play, forcing the pitcher to field a grounder and the throw the ball wide and allowing Hack to score from second. Following a pitching change, Seton Hall had runners on the corners for McNelly who chopped a ground ball in the infield and reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Hack to score from the third and tie the game up at 3-3.

With Allmer on the mound, Cal Baptist got the inning started with consecutive base hits and both moved up on a passed ball. An infield single served as the go-ahead run but Almer settled in registered two strikeouts to end the inning. Seton Hall threatened in the top of the eighth where junior Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) reached on a one-out double and Hack was hit by a pitch but a fielder's choice ended the final threat of the game.

Riverside, Calif. - A stellar pitching performance from starter Cole Hansen (Skillman, N.J.) and junior Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) set the tone with a three-hit game and three runs scored in a balanced effort for the Seton Hall baseball team as the Pirates defeated Cal Baptist, 12-3, on Sunday evening.

Junior Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) and graduate student Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) both had two hits and drove in two runs for the Pirates (4-5). Along with Hansen, who struck out six and allowed only four batters to reach in six innings of work, The Hall got two perfect innings of relief from freshman Michael Gillen (Rochelle Park, N.Y.) and tallied three strikeouts. The two hurlers retired 13 in a row from the final out of the fourth through the eighth inning.

How It Happened

Hansen got into a little bit of trouble in the first inning but worked out of it as the Lancers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. After Hansen worked a clean second inning, Seton Hall manufactured a crooked inning in the top of the third. Redshirt juniors Oscar Murray (Brentwood, Calif.) and Mark McNelly (Limerick, Pa.) got the inning started with back-to-back base hits and both would score on a wild pitch and a Viera single, respectively, putting the Pirates in front, 2-1. Consecutive walks with the bases loaded drawn by Sylvester and Clyde extended the Pirates' lead to 4-1 and Viera went home on a passed ball that made it 5-1 Pirates.

A sacrifice fly from sophomore Michael Callan Moss (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the top of the fifth made it a five-run game, 6-1, and Hansen followed that insurance run up with a shutdown home half of the fifth with two strikeouts. Seton Hall sprinkled six runs across the seventh, eighth and ninth innings that sealed the victory for the Pirates. The seventh featured an RBI triple off the bat of Sylvester and Clyde drove him in on an RBI base knock. Two more runs were scored in the eighth on errors that made it 10-1 and Murray added to the lead with an RBI double before McNelly sent Moss home on a sac fly.

  • The win was the 492nd career win for head coach Rob Sheppard.
  • Viera set a new career high with three hits on Sunday and its also a single-game team best this season.
