PREVIEW
Seton Hall will open the 2016 season with four games against SEC opponent Missouri. The Pirates will play a double-header on Saturday. While The Hall's pitching staff will look very similar to last year's team, their offense will be significantly different. The Pirates lost five regular starters to graduation and will feature a brand-new infield, with the exception of Chris Chiaradio. Zack Weigel, Derek Jenkins, Ryan Ramiz and Jackson Martin all return to provide the team with one of the best defensive outfields in the BIG EAST. On the mound, the Pirates only lost one starter, Anthony Elia, and added five new freshman arms, in addition to Andrew Politi, who missed his first season due to injury. Shane McCarthy, a freshman All-American who led the BIG EAST in earned run average, returns for his sophomore season, as does expected starters Zach Prendergast, Zach Schellenger and Anthony Pacillo.

Seton Hall was selected to finish third in the 2016 preseason BIG EAST Coaches Poll, with McCarthy being named to the Preseason First Team. St. John's is expected to repeat as champion and Creighton was picked second, just one point behind the Red Storm.

Seton Hall and Missouri only played one game prior to the 2016 season-opening series. The Tigers out-slugged the Pirates, 12-8, in 1981.

Missouri is coming off of a 30-28 season in which they finished third in the SEC East while ranking as high as No. 14 nationally. Mizzou returns five position starters and its top two weekend pitchers. It is ranked No. 34 in Collegiate Baseball's Preseason Top-40 poll.

PIRATES PICKED THIRD
Seton Hall was picked to finish third in the seven-team BIG EAST by the conference's coaches in the preseason poll. St. John's was selected as the preseason favorite to repeat as the BIG EAST champion in 2016. The Red Storm received 34 points and four first-place votes. For a second straight year, Creighton finished just one point behind St. John's in the voting for second place, and received the remaining three first-place votes.

MCCARTHY NAMED PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST
Sophomore Shane McCarthy was named to the 2016 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2015, McCarthy led the BIG EAST Conference in earned run average, fewest runs allowed, fewest earned runs allowed and fewest walks.

PIRATES RECEIVE VOTES
Seton Hall is receiving votes in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper's Fabulous 40 NCAA Division I preseason poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum. BIG EAST foes Creighton and St. John's are also receiving votes. Missouri, Seton Hall's first opponent, is ranked No. 34.

PIRATES ADD PROSINSKI
Former pitching great Jon Prosinski has joined his staff as Director of Baseball Operations for 2016. One of the greatest pitchers in Seton Hall history, Prosinski made a school record 57 career starts with the Pirates over four seasons. A two-time BIG EAST First Team selection, no pitcher in Seton Hall history has thrown more innings or struck out more batters and only one pitcher has won more games.

BIGGIO ENTERS HALL OF FAME
On July 26, Craig Biggio officially became the first former Seton Hall baseball player to be enshrined into Baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Biggio, who played at Seton Hall from 1985 to 1987, joined Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz as 2015 inductees.

2016 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2016 BIG EAST Baseball Championship will be played on Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md., May 26-29. Ripken Stadium is the home for the Aberdeen Ironbirds, a single A short-season affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.

MILESTONE APPROACHING
Head coach Rob Sheppard needs just 22 victories to pass Seton Hall coaching legend Owen T. Carroll for second on the Pirates' wins list. Currently, he has 320 victories. His father, Mike Sheppard, is Seton Hall's all-time leader in wins with 998.

NEW FACES
Seton Hall welcomes 10 new faces to the team in 2016. New to the pitching staff are Matt Ardente, Cullen Dana, Dylan Verdonk, Billy Layne, Jr. and Matt Ponsiglione. Hitters include Sebastiano Santorelli, Chris Villa, Anthony Scotti, Chris Talbott and Liam McArthur.

DEFRANCESCO HONORED
Former Seton Hall baseball player Tony DeFrancesco was named Minor League Baseball Manager of the Year by Baseball America. DeFrancesco is coming off a national championship with the AAA Fresno Grizzlies, a minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros, in 2015. In 2012, DeFrancesco became the first former Seton Hall player to become a big league manager when he served as interim skipper of the Astros after the franchise fired Brad Mills in August.

The SHU Baseball Team split today with Missouri. They lose the first game 4-1 and win the nightcap 8-4. They actually hit and pitched well today They hit into 3 DPs I the first game or it could have been different. A good sign is that they were hitting much better today than Fridays opener and have cut down on their strikeouts at the plate. They are 1-2,and hopefully can win game 4 against the Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

I was at the first game Saturday afternoon . Mogues looked very good at the plate . Reminds me of Mo Vaughn .

FORT MYERS, FLA. – Junior Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) continued his strong start to the season with a pair of doubles, but the Seton Hall baseball team was just 3-for-19 with runners in scoring position and it fell to Missouri, 4-1, in game one of Saturday’s double-header.

Missouri scored in each of the first three innings off Seton Hall starter Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.), and conversely, the Pirates left four men in scoring position without pushing across a run over the same span.

Seton Hall (0-2) scored its first run of the season in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Tiger lead to 4-1, but The Hall couldn’t get closer. With one out, Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) singled and stole second base. Mogues followed with his second double of the afternoon to plate Ramiz.

Turning Point:
With Missouri already ahead 2-0, Missouri’s Shane Benes connected on a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the third inning to double the Tigers’ lead to 4-0. Benes has now homered in both games so far this series.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Mogues reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two doubles and an RBI.

  • Senior Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) also reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • In his first start of the season, sophomore Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) recorded two hits (2-for-4). Schellenger took the loss, but pitched well after the third inning. The sophomore gave up four earned runs over 5.1 innings with five walks and eight strikeouts for the game.
  • Sophomore Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) allowed just one hit over 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. He also struck out two batters with no walks.

Damn, you outhit a team 24-7 you shouldn't split a doubleheader.

Busy day for Seton Hall Sports fans today. Baseball game is available on radio
via KTGR(ESPN Radio in Missouri) at noon. (The link is above)

It would be a nice start to the season if the Pirates can split with a top 35 team on
the first weekend of the season.

Mogues making contact and having an excellent start to the season is important. The rest of the
team are also having a good weekend at the plate. Too many strikeouts last year and that is the area
that they must improve upon.
