TUCSON - Freshman Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team, selected by the Collegiate Baseball on Wednesday.

Despite being a freshman, McCarthy made an immediate impact upon his arrival this season. The right-hander led the BIG EAST Conference in earned run average, fewest runs allowed, fewest earned runs allowed and fewest walks. McCarthy's 2.19 ERA is the lowest for a Seton Hall freshman starter since current major-leaguer Jason Grilli had a 1.85 ERA his freshman season 20 years ago in 1995.

In his first BIG EAST Championship start, McCarthy tossed six innings and gave up just three earned runs vs. Creighton. He was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for the final week of the regular season after 6.1 innings without an earned run and just three hits vs. Georgetown on May 14. McCarthy pitched back-to-back complete-game shutouts, and at one point had a stretch of 23 consecutive innings without surrendering an earned run. He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on March 23 and NJCBA Rookie of the Week on March 16.

McCarthy finished his first season in South Orange with a 4-4 record, a team-best 2.19 ERA, a team-high 65.2 innings pitched, 29 strikeouts and just nine walks.

It's the second straight year Seton Hall has had a member of the Freshman All-American Team. Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) earned the distinction in 2014.
