The Volleyball team had a nice 3-0 sweep of Butler last night in South Orange. It was
a good rebound from their loss at Providence earlier in the week. That loss was a bit
disappointing, with a chance for a road win against a team you should beat. So coming
back against Butler with a sweep was good to see.

Tonight's match against Xavier at Walsh is important because SHU would move into
the top 4 in the conference ahead of Xavier. The Pirates are young, but are very tough
to beat in South Orange. Winning at home is going to be key for SHU this season.

Tonight's match is at 6pm and available on the PSN.

Very tough loss for the gals last night. They lose in 5 sets to Xavier. SHU won
the first two sets and looked to be well on their way to an important conference
win. The Pirates were being handled in the 3rd game, but had a nice comeback
with the chance to end the match. SHU had 5 match points to win, but could not
deliver that last point. Xavier takes games 4 and 5 to take the match.

SHU had 2 difficult losses this week and probably 2 matches that they should
have put in their pockets. Give both Providence and Xavier a ton of credit for
not folding. These 2 losses could come back to hurt SHU's chances to qualify for
the BigEast Tournament. The good news is that there is still plenty of time to get back on track.
What you don't like is that they are losing the 5th set multiple times this season. Also, they
don't always have the answers when thing are going South. That's where the lack of experience
comes into play. Next match at SJU middle of this week.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women’s volleyball team won the first two sets in convincing fashion, but Xavier rallied to edge the Pirates, 3-2 (25-20, 25-19, 29-31, 17-25, 11-15), on Saturday.

Seton Hall (9-10, 3-4) came one point away from sweeping Xavier five times, but the Musketeers staved off five match points in the third set to win the marathon frame, 31-29, before downing the Pirates in sets four and five to complete the comeback.

Four Pirates reached double-figures in kills for only the second time this season. The Pirates were led by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.), who tallied 16 kills. Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) had 14 kills, Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) had 13 and Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had 11 kills.

The Hall registered a .385 attack percentage in each of the first two sets, while twice holding the Musketeers to under .150. The Pirates never trailed in the second set, scoring six of the first seven points to pull away.

Turning Point:
Seton Hall trailed for most of the third set, and were down by as many as seven points midway through the set, 16-9. But the Pirates rallied, and methodically chipped away at the Musketeer lead until an ace by Kacey Richards (Macedon, N.Y.) drew them even at 23. Xavier scored, to obtain set point, but the Pirates countered to tie the set at 24. Seton Hall then obtained match point with leads of 25-24, 26-25, 27-26, 28-27 and 29-28, but alas could not get the final point it needed. With The Hall in match point at 29-28, Xavier scored three straight points to steal set three, 31-29, and remain alive in the match.

Hansen tallied nine of her 14 kills in set three alone.

Xavier road the momentum generated by their set three victory to convincing wins in sets four and five. In fact, Seton Hall’s 29-28 lead in set three was the last lead it had in the match. The Hall committed nine attack errors in set four and registered just a .042 attack percentage. The Pirates cut a healthy Xavier lead to just one at 16-15, but couldn’t draw even and ultimately fell, 25-17. In set five, Xavier had a .400 attack percentage, jumped out to a 6-2 lead and never looked back.

Notes & Numbers:

  • Freshman Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) registered her team-leading seventh double-double of the season. She had a career-high 54 assists to go with 14 digs.
  • Junior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) matched her season-high with a match-high 27 digs.
  • With 27 digs, Fournier moves past former teammate Stacey Manthorpe for fifth on Seton Hall’s career digs list. She now has 1,369. Shelbey Manthorpe is fourth on the list with 1,476 digs.
  • It’s the seventh time this season and the 22nd time of her career that Fournier has recorded at least 20 digs.
  • It’s the third time this season and fifth time of her career that Schroeder has recorded at least 15 kills in a match.
