SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Junior Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) pitched 4.1 innings of hitless relief, but the Seton Hall baseball team was edged by Rutgers, 3-2, on Friday.

Burum entered the game with two outs in the fifth inning and was perfect for the remainder of the game. The 6-foot-5 right-hander retired all 13 batters he faced and lowered his ERA to an impressive 2.39.

With the score tied at two in the top of the fifth inning, Rutgers loaded the bases with just one out. Burum and Dan Ditusa (St. Charles, Ill.) did a good job to limit the damage, but a ground ball fielder's choice drove in the go-ahead run. The Seton Hall offense couldn't come up with the equalizer.

Matt Leon (Staten Island, N.Y.) took the hard luck loss despite pitching well in relief. The freshman entered the game with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the second inning and induced a double play to strand three Scarlet Knights. Unfortunately for Leon, he walked the first batter of the fifth inning before leaving the game and that runner came around to score to go-ahead run.

Rutgers (14-26-1) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to two walks and three extra-base hits off Seton Hall starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.).

Seton Hall (19-16) bounced back with a pair of runs to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning. Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) led off with a walk and moved to second on an infield single by Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.). After a double steal put both runners in scoring position, D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Martin with the Pirates' first run. With two outs, Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) singled home Jenkins to tie the game at two.

Annunziata reached base a team-high three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Jenkins also had two hits for the Pirates and swiped two stolen bases. The speedster now has a BIG EAST best 22 steals on the season.

In the eighth inning, Seton Hall appeared poised to tie the game, but was denied by a fine defensive play by Rutgers' left-fielder Vinny Zarrillo. With Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.)on first base, Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) rocketed a ball into the left-center field gap, but Zarrillo made a leaping grab and was able to double-off Alescioat first to retire the side.

Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow afternoon as it travels to Piscataway, N.J. for game two of its three-game series with Rutgers. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Senior Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) connected on his first home run of the season, but Seton Hall's offense generated little more as the Pirates fell to Rutgers, 4-2, at Bainton Field on Saturday.

The Pirates pounded out 12 hits, their most in their last seven games, but could only muster two runs.

Seton Hall starter Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) drops to 4-4 with the loss. The freshman pitched six innings and gave up four earned runs, while striking out two and walking none.

In the bottom of the second inning, McCarthy gave up back-to-back singles, the second of which hit the umpire near second base. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position and a ground out plated the first run of the game for Rutgers.

The next inning, Rutgers did damage with a pair of extra-base hits against McCarthy. The Seton Hall right-hander gave up a leadoff double and a one-out triple to Rutgers' Joe D'Annunzio to fall behind 2-0. Tom Marcinczyk followed with an RBI single on the first pitch he saw and the Pirates were in a 3-0 hole.

Falconi led off the fifth inning with his second career home run to cut the Scarlet Knights lead to 3-1.

Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) and D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) led off the top of the sixth inning with back-to-back singles. Rutgers threw out Ramiz at third base for the first out as the Pirates attempted a double steal. With two outs, Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) singled through the right side to score Ruhlman and cut the Rutgers lead to 3-2.

But Rutgers (15-26-1) got the run right back in the bottom of the inning as they struck for three singles off McCarthy to boost their lead back up to two runs, 4-2.

Seton Hall (19-17) got its offense going again in both the seventh and eighth innings, but left two men on base in both innings. In all, The Hall left nine men on base.

Joe DiBenedetto (Staten Island, N.Y.) ran his scoreless inning streak to 12.1 innings with two more sparkling frames today. The sophomore pitched to the minimum over the game's final two innings and struck out one batter.

Jenkins led The Hall with three hits. Both Boyd and Falconi had two hits apiece.

Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow afternoon for the finale of this three-game series, three-location series with Rutgers. The game will be at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, N.J. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. -- Senior Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) went 4-for-4 with a career-high six RBIs as the Seton Hall baseball team routed Rutgers, 16-5, on Sunday at TD Bank Ballpark, to salvage the final game of the weekend series.

Boyd finished just a triple short of the cycle, going 4-for-4 with his second home run of the season, two doubles, four runs scored, a sacrifice fly and the aforementioned six RBIs.

Collectively, the Pirates offense broke out for 16 runs and 17 hits, their most since collecting 19 hits vs. Saint Peter's on March 18. D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.), Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.), Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) and Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) had two hits on the day. Ramiz reached base four times.

Seton Hall (20-17) got its offense started from the get-go, erupting for four runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) singled up the middle. Weigel followed with a double to right field, advancing Falconi to third. Ruhlman then drove in both runners with a double of his own to give The Hall a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Boyd delivered the third Pirate double of the inning to score Ruhlman. Ramiz then reached on a throwing error by the Rutgers' second baseman and Boyd scored to make the score 4-0.

In the top of the second inning, Rutgers got three runs back against Seton Hall starter Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.).

With the runs coming early and often, both starting pitchers were pulled having thrown only two innings. Schellenger got a no decision with after giving up three earned runs. Rutgers' Gaby Rosa gave up four earned runs.

Leading 5-3, Boyd led off the third inning with his second home run of the season. Ramiz walked and Caputo singled up the middle. With one out, the Pirates again took advantage of a Rutgers' miscue. On a grounder hit by Jenkins, Rutgers' pitcher John O'Reilly attempted to get Caputo advancing to second base, but threw high. Ramiz scored to extend The Hall's lead to 7-3.

Up 7-4, Seton Hall's offense went back to work again in the fifth inning. Boyd singled, Ramiz walked and Caputo loaded the bases with a bunt single. Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled to right field, driving in two more Pirate runs. With one out, Falconi grounded out to short, but Caputo scored to put Seton Hall up, 10-4.

In the seventh inning, nine Pirates came to the plate as the Pirates scored five runs on three hits. None of the hits were larger than Boyd's two-out, bases clearing double. When the dust settled, The Hall had a commanding 16-4 advantage.

Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) again pitched excellently out of the bullpen. The senior entered in relief of Schellenger and pitched five innings, giving up just four hits and one earned run. Elia picked up the victory and improved to 2-1.

Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, April 29 when it travels to Saint Peter's for a mid-week non-conference battle. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
