SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Junior Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) pitched 4.1 innings of hitless relief, but the Seton Hall baseball team was edged by Rutgers, 3-2, on Friday.
Burum entered the game with two outs in the fifth inning and was perfect for the remainder of the game. The 6-foot-5 right-hander retired all 13 batters he faced and lowered his ERA to an impressive 2.39.
With the score tied at two in the top of the fifth inning, Rutgers loaded the bases with just one out. Burum and Dan Ditusa (St. Charles, Ill.) did a good job to limit the damage, but a ground ball fielder's choice drove in the go-ahead run. The Seton Hall offense couldn't come up with the equalizer.
Matt Leon (Staten Island, N.Y.) took the hard luck loss despite pitching well in relief. The freshman entered the game with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the second inning and induced a double play to strand three Scarlet Knights. Unfortunately for Leon, he walked the first batter of the fifth inning before leaving the game and that runner came around to score to go-ahead run.
Rutgers (14-26-1) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to two walks and three extra-base hits off Seton Hall starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.).
Seton Hall (19-16) bounced back with a pair of runs to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning. Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) led off with a walk and moved to second on an infield single by Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.). After a double steal put both runners in scoring position, D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Martin with the Pirates' first run. With two outs, Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) singled home Jenkins to tie the game at two.
Annunziata reached base a team-high three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
Jenkins also had two hits for the Pirates and swiped two stolen bases. The speedster now has a BIG EAST best 22 steals on the season.
In the eighth inning, Seton Hall appeared poised to tie the game, but was denied by a fine defensive play by Rutgers' left-fielder Vinny Zarrillo. With Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.)on first base, Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) rocketed a ball into the left-center field gap, but Zarrillo made a leaping grab and was able to double-off Alescioat first to retire the side.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow afternoon as it travels to Piscataway, N.J. for game two of its three-game series with Rutgers. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
