and no, that doesn't add up but the gametracker I was watching along said the final was 93-57...

The gang gathered together and we were joined by Harty9. When he realized that we lead the cheers he said man I think I have to move upstairs! LOL!

Bryant is a pretty good team. And right out of the gate we dismantled them limb from limb. Fantastic.

I caught parts of this game. Wow, I never thought they could replace last year's backcourt. Still too early ,but the new gals in the backcourt didn't miss a beat and look to be very solid.

As a group this year's entire backcourt may be collectively stronger. TRS looks to be back to form and I liked the athleticism of the team.

Tiffany Jones was impressive.

Gordan is moving better in the paint, but she really struggles on layins. That would be the concern
that I took from game.

It's amazing how Tony B has used the Donovan recruits to ignite this program. Tony and the coaching staff deserve a good deal of credit of putting their stamp on this next batch of their own recruits. At some point you realize that this is now a good college basketball program and how far they've come.

Weird stat from today's game as SH was out rebounded 47 - 32. Bryant had 25 offensive rebounds and 22 defensive rebounds while SH had 13 offensive and 19 defensive rebounds.

  • Starting four plus two: The four are Kena, Aleesha, Tab and Tiffany. Kena and Aleesha play together like DiDi and Daisha, specifically, they work well as a pair *and* leading another group of four team mates as the solo PG. Wow - cannot over-estimate how important this two-headed killer combo is in basketball. They're fantastic. Tab is Tab and was on fire today. Tiffany picked up from where she left off and is already flying higher. These four are bedrock for the team. Why the plus 2? Well, Bird is rightfully the starting center and got a number of important rebounds and also moves laterally much better than I remember from last year, but she has stone cold hands at the other end. So who is there to swap right in? Taylor - a freshman playing almost like a sophomore. She will anchor us for her remaining three years.
  • Solid bench options: Kena, Aleesha and TT each can run three different squads - I saw all sorts of logical combinations run by these three PG. After these three and after Taylor comes off the bench, we have Tara Inman and Jordan Mosley, followed by Jordan Molyneax who got a couple of blocks today (that's very important - she has a strong leap).
  • Taking charges - Inman (1) and Byrne (3!!) - I really like that.
  • Steals - all sorts of players deflected the ball to generate steals
  • Box Out - more of this is happening properly, so I'm very pleased
  • Favorite Thing: came out and IMMEDIATELY put the iron hand onto the opposition and did NOT let up - wow - that was awesome.
This team is a very strong contender. AGAIN!

80, at least five of the Bryant players were very tall. Second - I thought the refs let them push from behind against the player with the already established position - it happened frequently and I could not make out why fouls were not called. If that's standard play (pushing from behind), then our players had better toughen up and expect to get pushed away from the ball.

Box Score

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's basketball team kicked off the 2015-16 season in style, cruising to a 93-57 victory over Bryant on Friday morning at Walsh Gymnasium. Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) led the offensive assault with 25 points as The Hall shot 50 percent from the floor and drilled 11 3-pointers in the win. The contest marked the season opener for both squads.

In addition to Richardson-Smith, Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.) scored 17 and Aleesha Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Tiffany Jones (New York, N.Y.) added 14 and 13, respectively. The Pirates (1-0) capitalized on 25 Bryant turnovers by out-scoring the Bulldogs (1-0) 38-5 in points off turnover and 11-0 in fast-break points.

The Hall got off to a blistering start, taking a 39-16 lead after one quarter thanks to a 13-for-19 start from the floor. The Pirates hit seven of their first 10 attempts from 3-point range and led by 30 at halftime. Ivory Bailey led the way for Bryant with 21 points and Breanna Rucker had seven points and 12 rebounds.

Coach Anthony Bozzella on the result:

"I thought we came out with a lot of energy, and more importantly had a lot of poise with that energy. Tiffany Jones was really our MVP today for the job she did on Breanna Rucker, holding her to [2-7] shooting."

Turning Point

After Bryant initially won the opening tip, Richardson took a steal and coasted the other way for an easy lay-in that sparked a 10-0 run to start the contest. The run took under two minutes and forced a Bryant timeout, as The Hall never looked back and led throughout.

Inside The Numbers

- The Pirates shot 50 percent (34-of-68) from the floor and 38.7 percent (12-for-31) from 3-point range

- Conversely, The Hall held Bryant to 18-of-60 (30 percent) from the floor

- Seton Hall recorded only eight turnovers and forced 25 from Bryant

- Richardson-Smith scored 20 or more in a game for the 22nd time in her career and eclipsed 10 for the 61st time

- The new-look starting backcourt of Powell and Richardson, each making their Seton Hall debut, combined for 31 points, nine assists and seven steals

- The 36-point victory margin was the highest in three seasons under Bozzella and the best since an 82-35 victory over New Orleans on Dec. 19, 2012

News and Notes

- Friday's contest marked the first all-time meeting between Seton Hall and Bryant

- The Pirates improve to 33-10 all-time in season openers and 3-0 under Bozzella

- The 93 points in the season opener are the most in a lid-lifter since The Hall dropped 95 on Monmouth to begin the 1993-94 campaign

- The contest marked the official Seton Hall debuts for Taylor Byrne (Massapequa, N.Y.), Martha Kuderer (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Powell, Richardson and LaTecia Smith (Gardenia, Calif.).

- The Hall has won 23 of its last 24 games in Walsh Gymnasium and is 33-6 at home under Bozzella

Up Next

The Pirates continue an early-season home stretch when they welcome in-state rival Rutgers to Walsh Gymnasium on Monday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. The 2015 NCAA Tournament and 2014 WNIT Sweet 16 re-match will air on FS2 with Dave Popkin and LaChina Robinson on the call.

Bozzella's style favors guards and wings. Also, the frontcourt is a weakness on this year's team. Hopefully they improve between now and the start of the Big East season.

80, at least five of the Bryant players were very tall. Second - I thought the refs let them push from behind against the player with the already established position - it happened frequently and I could not make out why fouls were not called. If that's standard play (pushing from behind), then our players had better toughen up and expect to get pushed away from the ball.
They have to box out to draw the foul. If they just stand there and there's incidental contact on the rebound, they won't get a call. That happened a lot last year.

Molyneaux and Byrne will need to really help T Jones and the guards in rebounding.

The game was a great tune-up for the big games next week. The offense shot well and limited turnovers while the defense forced bad plays throughout by Bryant. I'm REALLY looking forward to Rutgers and Princeton next Monday and Thursday.

The game was a joy to watch from the get-go. An easy win but Tony played everybody to keep it respectable and not roll up the score too much. .

Wait till you see our new players. This team has not missed a beat from last year.

For one, Sr. Kena Richardson at 5'4 has shake n bake explosive moves that are unbelievable. And freshman Taylor Byrne is the kind of big girl that programs like ND and Tennessee get. ( UConn is in another galaxy) Sturdy, tough, smart, good passer.

Rutgers next -this Monday night at Walsh. Go Pirates!

Thanks BluePirate not only for responding but for your observations and pretty damn good analysis on all things related to women's BB. Any truth to the rumor you'll be joining Tony's staff as a volunteer coach?

Only kidding of course.

Feel like Bryant also got a ton of rebounds once Tony took out the starters. Seemed like there were a bunch of possessions in a row where Bryant got 2 or 3 or 4 offensive rebounds each trip down the floor. Watching the game I didnt get the sense that we were getting beaten on the boards until those last 5 mins or so.

That is it 6711. Now I did observe above that there was more box out than in the past, but when I put my mind to it, the standout in that department is Byrne. She knows how to actually do it. Gordon stands up and we lost a number of sure rebounds. I am still hoping Molyneaux finds the inner tiger in her tank because she can leap and block.

This is one fantastic team. Hope that many of you will decide to buy a ticket at the door on Monday night!

For those who've never seen our women play under Tony, you don't know what you're missing. This is sound , fundamental, aggressive basketball the way it should be played. A constant push toward the basket.
And very active hands on defense from everyone.
