Smith-Rivera declares

I don't get why he's signing with an agent, especially if he's at risk of not being drafted. Unless he already has plans to play overseas or something, seems bizarre. As a BE fan, would have been nice for him to stay for his Sr year.

dumb decision. he has absolutely no shot in the NBA. Giving up another year of a Gtown education just to eventually play in Europe, where he can easily go at any time, is dumb.

On its face, it looks like a bad decision. However, he may need the money asap for some reason. Who knows his circumstances?

Who knows what his reason is? Maybe he's not doing well in school, doesn't enjoy being in college, or needs to make some money. He's probably not an NBA player, but if he wants to leave and pursue his dream, more power to him. Best of luck to him. May he have a successful life.

My gut without any inside info is that this choice has more to do with just being an NBA BB decision.

He clearly isn't ready for the league IMO.

Hollis Thompson made a "dumb" decision to go pro when he was a role player at Georgetown. A couple years later and he has 140 NBA games under his belt (if you consider the 76ers an NBA team).

Basketball-wise it may not be the dumbest decision to get out of JTIII's system. It may win games, but it tends to depress individual value, especially for non-post players.

Draft Express is reporting he is a 22yr old junior. Doesn't make much sense to return except for getting his degree. Will make a ton of money overseas

What's the upside to hiring an agent? Obviously you'll need one eventually whether you get drafted or go overseas, but why not leave the option open to return to school?

The NBA isn't the only place to make money and these kids have only so long to make that money.

If he can make 200K+ in Europe and needs the money, it's not the worst idea in the world.

Maybe going back to school is not an option for him, for whatever reason. If you're not ready for the NBA and plan on going overseas, you definitely need an agent (and also need to learn a foreign language). There are many countries where Smith-Rivera can earn a living playing ball, and he might not even know the names of some of them. Hopefully his agent will be plugged in.

I can count the number of kids this past decade with my fingers who, in retrospect, hurt themselves by staying in school to long. But the number of kids who hurt their long term future by leaving school to soon is A LOT.
You can understand when your a poor student that $100,000 (if their lucky) to play basketball is decent money. But what they don't understand is that your long term earnings in basketball and life is much better if you stay 4 years. There is just way too many cases that support this.
