I think tonight could start a nice upswing in the fortunes of this year's team. Hopefully, they can win 3 or 4 of the next 5. So that's the positive.
I have to say that Willard can frustrate me at times with his use of the roster. He obviously is hooked on that substitution pattern about 6 to 8 minutes into the game.
His use of Anthony is so puzzling to me. Last year he was good enough to play as the backup with virtually no production in league play. This year he basically can't sniff the court in the OOC games.
Now he's back to getting minutes as the backup in the toughest part of the schedule against top 10 ranked teams? No offense to Anthony, but he doesn't seem to be a Big East player to me at this point. Virtually no improvement and may have regressed.
Xavier was going through the entire frontcourt like melted butter and Anthony was completely exploited. Anderson plays the last several minutes of the first half and to me seemed to be adding something out there when the Pirates were mounting a comeback. My eyes told me that Anderson was better than Anthony. Was I wrong? We never saw Anderson again.
In addition after Delgado gets his 2nd foul he puts Singh in with Anthony and possibly Gordon at the same time. You can't Take IW out in a game like that if Delgado is on the bench, you just can't.
Plus now you have Singh playing with the 2nd unit and the kid is not relaxed in any way. He misses a quality look and commits 2 quick fouls. Out of the game and I don't believe he played again.
Are you giving Singh the best chance to contribute by putting him in at that time? Yes, we probably will get a better Singh in the next few years, but I'm concerned about getting the most out of him this year? We have to have an outside threat in the game in the last few minutes of a close game. Would loved to have had Willard call timeout and have him on the court for one of those last sets against Villanova on the offensive side??
Last year I was frustrated that he never used Sonogo in some of the games for defensive purposes. I'm sure he improved over the summer, but you don't get that much better in 6 months. Instead we had to watch Manga on the court.
Anyway, Willard has to get more productivity out of the entire roster moving forward. How are we supposed to beat good teams if Sonogo, Nzei, Singh, Anthony never get any points? In addition Gordon can't shoot from the outside and Delgado takes 1 ceremonial jumper early in the game?
