That's my guess as well.

Wouldnt be be surprised if Aiken is behind.

Good for St John's.

I wrote something the other day about growing up with PJS cousin. After Mullin was hired I talked to my buddy who keeps in contact with PJ quite a bit. Told me he said that PJ is extremely high on Mullin and within 2 or 3 years will have SJU as a perennial top 20 to 25 team. He is a Dream Teamer a 5 time NBA all star ans a Naismith HALL OF FAMER. My friend said PJ has absolutely no worries about how he can coach but will also take a little time. And Mullin is a good guy but a no bs coach whatso ever. For instance would never let a Jeff Robinson shoot the amount of threes as much as he did. Mullin is a nationally known figure and to this day PJ keeps in contact with him. WAS his coach on the 1992 DREAM TEAM. A s they get more and more successful watch the improvements and possibly a new building to replace Carnessecca. MSG is important to the program but not like your own place. ANd no 55 000 a game rent. In the next few weeks just watch who he brings in to be part of his staff. Mind boggling. All known respected guys. AND SJU winning doesn't help us one bit . IT HELPS THEM PERIOD. AND PLEASE DONT INTIMATE THAT THEY ARE PAYING OFF PLAYERS. MULLIN would have to be a total lunatic to even try something like that and its not in hid DNA. I also see since sen RAY LESNIAK came out for improvement at RU they are now with the total support planning a number of big changes. A lot of politicians want them to succed BIG TIME. I get the feeling if we had that same type of political support Willard may be gone and fast. But it seems we have faded into oblivion dur to the in competency of our administration and a few big donors. Funny how a few can ruin a program. OH finally my friend cousin of PJ said that he will never tell me what PJ thinks about our situation but is not at all pleased. Will never critize anyone publicly. ONLY thing I could get out of him was that PJ without question feels we have let a huge opportunity pass although there is still time. we settle for mediocrity.

Great Info. What burns me is that our Administration does not utilize the assets that it has. Why is Hobbs listening to Pitino when guys like PJ should be advising him. Too bad PJ won't come back. I get it. Why risk ruining is stature here. But, I am sure he would be invaluable in picking the next coach.

The unique thing about any opprotunity is that you have to have the will to seize the opprotunity and value the results from taking advantage of an opprotunity when it presents itself.

It does seem like PJ is underutilized by SHU. Not sure why. He should be a treasure trove for us (pun intended, LOL)!

I think Mullin's going to be an ace for them. The guys got all the credentials, is St. John's, and there's no way he's not going to be supported with all they can muster up, IMO.

It should be interesting to see how a guy who has never coached before does. The BE has some really good coaches, and if you have s weakness, they can exploit it. I would expect him to bring in some really good players with all the excitement. Lavin brought in a great class his first year as did Rice and most other new coaches. We got a bunch of canaries , but excluding willard most new coaches bring in good players.

I would hope that when our next search committee is put together it would include among its members those who can bring their considerable basketball knowledge to the table on what we really need in a coach and I would love to see PJ on that committee, Arturas and, if he's nor a candidate Adrian. We really have to get it right the next time we go looking for a coach and people like PJ and Arturas could raise the odds of us getting it right .

What search committee? It should be AD Lyons, that's what he gets paid for.

No one can know for sure how Mullin's technical skills / X's & Os stack up yet.

But one thing is for sure - he is a savvy operator.

He's got a huge tail wind of media and public support. He's savvy enough to catapult that into immediate recruiting success. I have little doubt of this.

Contrast that with our own hapless Coach Fragile. We had as much national media attention and buzz between summer 2014 and January 2015 as we've had since Amaker.

Willard got there by luck and left-handed ness - which is fine - but the telling thing is rather that catapult that into recruiting and media success, he's brought everything crashing down.

Lavin came in and lit it up on the recruiting trail. His biggest talent left after one year and he spent the next several years proving that he couldn't effectively coach the talent that stayed.

After you sift through the hype, Mullin's hire poses at least as many questions as answers. It would be quite remarkable, I would even say stunning, if he turned out to be a top notch college basketball coach never having coached a basketball team at any level.

I agree. Search committee's are usually worthless. The decision should be made by a sports management professional namely the AD. That's what he was hired for. The mistake our University President made last time is that he turned the process over to the Law School Dean. A very competent individual & excellent Professor & Dean but this was not his area of expertise. I know we all think we know more than those whose job it is which is why so many of us play Fantasy Sports. But in reality the vast majority of times the person trained in that particular area is the one best equipped to make the decision.

And he gets paid a lot to do just that...we have a minimal number of scholarship sports so you really need to get this right, especially since Men's BB is the flagship program. Sure Lyons should seek out opinions and advice from those like PJ, Griffin...but it's his hire. What school over the past four weeks has hired a HC through a search committee???

It remains to be seen if Mullin will pan out, but number one is a coach has to have command, presence and basic knowledge of the game. Obviously want him to have ALL the qualities but you can surround yourself with and X and O guy, a strong recruiting assistant(s) and even someone that can handle "programmatic details". Look at the four coaches in today's games...all have different styles and approaches, but they have the complete attention of their players and command of the game.

There will be a search committee and while Lyons will chair it there will be others involved and one thing SH doesn't want is a repeat of what happened when we conducted our last search, having an inexperienced novice making the decision .

If that's the case, we're screwed (once again). 80, there's a big difference with an AD making the hire vs. a Law School Dean. That's his job...he better know what he's doing and not need a formal committee to help him make it.

So the people who hired our AD won't let him do his job cause he is a novice?

I agree we shoulnt need a search committee. a good AD comes into a job already with a list of football and or basketball candidates should a change be needed. however I personally feel at SHU with our track record to use the knowledge of a PJ ADRIAN GRIFFIN ARTURAS MARK BRYANT ETC. would be an asset. I bet in an hour they could sit down and have a list of names who they feel would be right for this job includind assistants. they know the college and pro game and the people very well. they would be like having our own personal data base. I don't really trust lyons. look at our situation . he was supposed to be the tough guy and fix things yet did nothing concerning a coaching change. so with that never hurts to get opinions of our former coaches and players. this time next year will be brutal. whoever and whatever is keeping WILLARD here will be public enemy number 1. wait and see.

I was told you have to win first before you can recruit talent. I believe everything WILLARD and Freddy say as I wont to be proper SHU fan now.
