I have noticed a lot of negative tones and mob like mentality recently, so I wanted to have one of my State of the Union type posts.
I think the program is going in the right direction, 3 years in a row with appearances in the NCAA Tournament. This year we won a game in the tournament and gave the eventual runner's up all they could handle. Yes, our season didn't go perfectly and we had some missed opportunities that cost us seeding. Still we are trending in the right direction.
Recruiting still seems to be a concern to many on the board, but changes have been and will be made that should improve recruiting going forward. I think bringing in Tony Skinn will be a HR. He has quickly gotten us involved with some very talented players outside of our normal area and I do believe he will land a few of them in the near future. Although I can't discuss the some of the other moves yet, I do like them as well. I feel recruiting will improve both locally and nationally.
As far as talent goes, I really think the current group has more upside then the 2017-2018 Pirates. Powell will only get better and has a chance to be an All League scorer. TT has a chance to be the best offensively skilled big in the Conf. Cale has a chance to be a really really good all around player. Sandro has the talent to be a very good player in the BE. Nzei gives us a solid big that will produce on offense but needs to work on his defense. I have to see more of McKnight but I hear lots of good things about him. Rhoden can be a star by the time he leaves SO. I think Nelson is a Carrington clone. Gill will surprise with his athleticism at his size and bring some needed defense off the bench. I don't honestly know what to expect out of Brodie.
We are currently looking at a lot of potential but not much in the proven results category, with 3 Seniors who were All Time Pirates being replaced that is to be expected. Our staff's calling card has always been development and I think they have a lot of nice pieces of clay to work with. We have a staff full of younger guys who were pretty good players in their time and can really improve skill sets. I am very optimistic and can't wait until November.
P.S. If we landed a kid rated between 130-175 that had trouble playing defense and couldn't hit the side of the barn, there would be a bunch of ticked off people on the board. I think PM will really struggle at RU and will be looked at to do way more then he is capable of.
