FULL NABC ALL-DISTRICT TEAMS

South Orange, N.J. - Junior Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) of the Seton Hall men's basketball team has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 5 second team, the organization announced Friday.

Gibbs, who previously has been named second-team All-BIG EAST, two-time BIG EAST Player of the Week and five-time selection to the Honor Roll, enjoyed a breakout season in which he ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in scoring (16.3 PPG), fifth in assists (3.8 APG), second in three-point shooting (.436), second in three-pointers made (2.6 3PG) and sixth in assist/turnover ratio (1.9). His three-point shooting is also the ninth-best in the country. He was the only player in the BIG EAST to rank in the conference's top five in scoring, assists and three-point shooting.

The sharp shooter turned up his game during BIG EAST play, ranking second in scoring (17.5 PPG), fifth in assists (4.1 APG) and third in assist/turnover ratio (2.0).

Gibbs had nine 20-point games this season, including a career-high, 40-point outburst in the championship game of the 2014 Paradise Jam, leading to MVP honors. Eight of the nine 20-point games came during BIG EAST play, including a 25-point, eight-assist day in Seton Hall's upset win over then-No. 15 St. John's and a 30-point game vs. Butler. Seven times this season he was able to post more than 15 points and five assists. He's also was a prolific three-point shooter, making four or more in a game eight times this season.

Interesting that Ryan Arcidiacono, Big East Co-POY couldn't even make the District 5 First team.

Great kid, very god player but what were the league coaches thinking with that ridiculous pick?

Well deserved honor for SG. What great strides he has made in his two (three) years at the Hall,

I've probably harped on this enough, but "ridiculous" doesn't begin to describe that pick. I just think coaches love him because he's an all-out hustle, dive on the floor for loose balls type player and I don't think for a minute that the Gibbs incident didn't not only give him somewhat of a sympathetic vote, but that it also may have cost Gibbs a shot at the co-POY as well. Their stats aren't even close to comparable, and Gibbs had some clutch moments mixed in as well. It's been mentioned that the first -team selections were all from winning programs, but it's not like the MLB MVP award where making the playoffs seems to be a prerequisite in a lot of voter's eyes.

So the NABC "structure" is by league, not by geographic district?

Is there a team from a league other than the Big East in District 5?

Why would they do that? So that the top leagues get their own "district" and the smaller leagues can be lumped with others like them without feeling bad?

Curious.

That's the way the soccer coaches do their rankings and post-season teams as well.

Probably so that players who've played against each get ranked together.
