The Tip

It's here.A belated gift arrives on Wednesday as with the holiday season winding down, the action on the hardwood is set to ramp up when Seton Hall travels to Milwaukee to square off with Marquette in the BIG EAST opener for both squads.

One streak will come to an end with the Pirates (10-2, 0-0 BIG EAST), winners of their last five, take on a Golden Eagles (10-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) team that has rattled off nine consecutive victories after opening the season with two losses in the first three outings.

The two sides will be meeting for the first time since last season's BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden, a game in which Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) delivered team-highs in both points and rebounds for SHU.

Whitehead is coming off a virtuosic performance in which he handed out a career-high 10 assists to spur a 66-49 rout of USF in the non-conference finale last Tuesday and enters league play as one of two players in the conference who rank among the top-seven in both scoring (14.8 ppg) and assists (4.1 apg) alongside Preseason Player of the Year Kris Dunn of Providence.

The standout sophomore was sidelined last season however when a 20-point effort from Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and a double-double from rebounding machine Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) helped Seton Hall secure its first-ever victory at Marquette (1/28) - an 80-70 win that featured 23 assists for The Hall as a team.

Carrington has scored in double-figures a team-best 10 times this season while Delgado heads into league play on the heels of five consecutive double-doubles and in prime position to repeat as BIG EAST rebounding champion; averaging a BIG EAST-best 10.1 boards/game.

Delgado's stiffest competition on the glass may come from MU's stellar freshman Henry Ellenson, a McDonald's All-American that has quickly established himself as one of the premier players in the country, ranking second in the conference in both scoring (16.8 ppg) and rebounding (9.8 rpg).

Ellenson headlines a cast that has helped Marquette to a 7-2 home record through nine outings while fellow newcomers Haanif Cheatham (10.3 ppg) and Traci Carter (4.9 apg) have complemented each other well and have commanded starting roles. Sophomore Sandy Cohen III and junior Luke Fischer are also combining for nearly 10 more points per game than they did a season ago, helping Marquette enter the BIG EAST slate averaging 80.5 ppg.

The Hall has similarly benefited from the continued development of Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) and Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.), two vital members of a young core that has powered SHU to double-digit non-conference victories for the fourth time in five years and is well-attuned to the rigors of the 18-game BIG EAST slate after playing central roles as freshmen.

Pirate Points

- The Hall wrapped up non-conference play with its 10th victory of the season last Tuesday, leading wire-to-wire in a convincing 66-49 victory over USF. Angel Delgado recorded his fifth consecutive double-double and the 16th of his career; finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the second-straight game. Freshman Veer Singh (New York, N.Y.) turned in his best performance to this point in the season, knocking down four 3-pointers in 17 minutes off the bench to finish as the only other Pirate in double-figures (12 pts)

- Last season’s BIG EAST rebounding champion, Delgado heads into conference play once again atop the league rankings at 10.1 rebounds per game. Delgado’s current run of five-straight double-doubles marks the longest for a Seton Hall player since the late Eddie Griffin, Seton Hall’s only other BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, recorded a double-double in 10 consecutive appearances during the 2000-01 season. Delgado has registered double-digit rebounds in nine of 12 games this season after doing so 10 times in 18 BIG EAST games last year; including both against the Golden Eagles during the regular season.

- Flourishing at the point guard position, sophomore Isaiah Whitehead was at the forefront of a well-balanced attack that saw the Pirates record a season-high 21 assists in the win over the Bulls. Whitehead handed out a career-high 10 helpers, moving his season average to 4.1 apg - the seventh-highest in the BIG EAST. Entering conference play, Whitehead also ranks seventh in the league in scoring (14.8 ppg) and joins Preseason Player of the Year Kris Dunn (PC) as the only players who stand among the top-seven in both categories

- Wednesday marks a return to the BMO Harris Bradley Center where The Hall finished with 23 assists in an 80-70 victory last season; the program’s first-ever win in eight all-time road games against Marquette. The 23 assists matched the program’s highest total during the Kevin Willard era (vs. St. John’s, 2/14/12 - W 94-64) and the performance also featured a then career-high 20 points from Khadeen Carrington as well as another double-double from Delgado (12 pts, 11 reb)

- The win over the Bulls was also the latest in a series of stellar defensive efforts that has seen The Hall surrender under 70 points in nine of 12 games this season and yield an average of 59.0 ppg during its five-game unbeaten streak. Last season’s victory at Marquette and a subsequent 92-80 triumph over Xavier at home in the following game (1/31) represent two of the three instances among The Hall’s 12 BIG EAST wins over the last two years in which its opponent has scored 70 points or more. Overall, SHU is 22-6 (.786) over the last two seasons when limiting its opponent to 69 points or less

- The Pirates bring a five-game winning streak into their BIG EAST opener against a Marquette program that came out on top when the teams met at the conference tournament last March. Seton Hall has won its last three league openers, most recently downing then-no. 15 St. John’s, 78-67, to kick-off the conference slate last season. The result marked the first time that SHU won three-straight BIG EAST openers since doing so in the 1998-99, 1999-00 and 2000-01 campaigns. The Hall has only won four-straight league openers one time in its history as a founding member of the conference (1987-90).

- The Hall heads into this Wednesday’s BIG EAST opener against perhaps the most potent frontcourt tandem in the conference in Henry Ellenson and Luke Fischer having established itself as a force on the interior in its own right. The Hall scored 36 points in the paint in the victory over the Bulls, marking the 10th time this season that the squad has registered 30+ points from in close after doing so just 11 total times last year. To this point in the season, SHU is averaging 36.8 points in the paint per game

- While the Pirates have made their mark on the inside, Veer Singh has provided an added perimeter threat as a reserve, combining with senior Derrick Gordon (Plainfield, N.J.) and redshirt-freshman Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria) to give Kevin Willard a trio of impact performers off the bench. Gordon, who has made two starts this season, finished with eight points, four rebounds and three assists as a substitute vs. USF, his seventh effort of 8+ points off the bench this season. Nzei filled in for Sanogo in the starting five for the first three games of the current winning streak, scoring 8+ points in each game. Against the Bulls, he notched his fourth performance of 8+ points in a reserve role - chipping in nine points, five rebounds and two blocks

- Another key component of the Seton Hall attack has been the steady stream of Pirates at the free throw line as through 12 games, Seton Hall has knocked down only 23 less free throws (183) than their opponents have attempted (206) overall. SHU has attempted 20+ free throws in a game on eight occasions while the 21 free throws attempted by USF last time out represent just the second time that The Hall has yielded 20+ free throws

- High-percentage opportunities have been a staple of the Seton Hall offense this season as in addition to its propensity for getting to the charity stripe, The Hall has excelled at generating second chance opportunities. Both Angel Delgado (3.3 off reb. / game, t-2nd) and Ismael Sanogo (2.6 off reb. / game, 9th) rank among the top-10 in the league on the offensive glass and the Pirates have totaled double-digit second chance points in each of the last 10 outings (11 times this season). In six BIG EAST victories last season, SHU averaged 13.2 second chance points per game

- The BIG EAST Conference will ring in the New Year with a full day of BIG EAST Basketball for the New Year’s Marathon on FS1. From morning until midnight, fans can watch all 10 teams battle it out for BIG EAST glory to see who will be on top come March at Madison Square Garden. The action begins with Seton Hall and DePaul at Prudential Center and fans can follow and join the conversation on social with #BEmarathon

Scouting Marquette
- Marquette captured its ninth consecutive win on Sunday in its non-conference finale, downing Presbyterian, 84-66, at home as Henry Ellenson and Luke Fischer each scored 17 points

- The Golden Eagles have not lost since an 89-61 setback against Iowa on November 19 that dropped the team to 1-2 overall. During the current winning streak, has won by an average of 18.1 points behind a total of six victories by a double-digit margin

- Freshman Henry Ellenson has emerged as an early frontrunner for BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and has led the team in scoring in each of the last three games. The McDonald’s All-American ranks second in the league at 9.8 rebounds/game, the third-highest total among Division I freshmen

- Fellow freshmen Haanif Cheatham and Traci Carter have taken over the starting roles in the backcourt and helped drive an offense that enters league play averaging 80.5 points per game. Individually, Cheatham ranks fifth among BIG EAST freshmen at 10.3 ppg and 11th overall with a shooting percentage of 55.8 percent while Carter leads all conference rookies with 4.9 assists per contest

- Marquette and first-place Xavier are the only two teams in the BIG EAST that enter league play ranked among the top-five in both scoring offense and scoring defense. MU’s 80.5 ppg stands fourth while the Golden Eagles are allowing just 69.2 ppg, the fifth-lowest total in the conference

- After averaging 3.8 ppg and making seven starts in 31 appearances as a freshman, sophomore Sandy Cohen III has been a part of the starting five on nine occasions and has posted 9.5 ppg, and needs just four points to surpass his point total from a season ago (114 pts 15-16 / 117 pts 14-15)

- The formidable frontcourt duo of Ellenson and Luke Fischer is one of two pairs of teammates that each rank among the top-10 in the BIG EAST in scoring. Ellenson (16.8 ppg) ranks second while Fischer stands ninth at 14.5 ppg, up from 11.0 ppg last season. Providence’s Ben Bentil (18.8 ppg, 1st) and Kris Dunn (16.5 ppg, 3rd) are the only other teammates among the top-10

It may be very hard for IW/KC/Flash to get inside and score in the paint this game.

Fischer and Ellenson will be guarding Angel/ish/Nzei... None of those players are outside threats meaning MU's twin towers will be staying in the painting all game.

Flip side. Guarding the paint could mean foul trouble if our guards play aggressive and smart.

I would say the same with Angel but he most often avoids contact when he has the ball by fading away with his shot instead initiating contact.

A positive. If Ellenson and/or Fischer go to cover the driving player.... Mike/Ish/Angel all can grab the passes and score effectively down low.

We have very rarely had 2 players can play down low together who can both catch/pass/score effectively.
