Some scout stories given to is from our SHU friends on that site....
Despite a quick exit from tournament play, It was another good week for New York City point guard Isaiah Washington.
Playing in the Fab 48 in Las Vegas, the St. Raymond High senior-to-be exploded for 33 points on Friday night. That helped his New Heights teams earn a 79-66 victory over a Belmont Shore (CA) squad that included 5-star forward Billy Preston.
Saturday, however, brought a first round tourney loss for New Heights against RM5 Elite. Washington was held to eight points but dished out seven assists in the 67-60 defeat.
Ranked as the No. 71player in the Class of 2017, the 6-foot-0 Washington told us at the UA Finals in Georgia last week that he was hearing most seriously from Minnesota, Seton Hall, New Mexico and Texas A&M.
His play over the last week has drawn rave reviews and an expanded list of serious suitors that he gave last night to our Jeff Rabjohns after the game.
"Minnesota, Seton Hall, New Mexico, Butler is showing a lot of interest, Syracuse, Alabama, Georgia Tech, Xavier, that's it," Washington said.
Texas A&M was likely an accidental omission as the Aggie coaches have been courtside regulars the last two open periods.
Indiana might not be an accidental omission, but the Hoosiers have stayed in contact.
"It's been on and off with them," Washington said last night. "They still have a shot. They call my coach a lot."
Earlier this summer at the NBPA Top 100 Camp he elaborated more on the Hoosiers. Washington said the Indiana interest dates back to his sophomore season at St. Raymond. That's the alma mater of Indiana assistant coach Chuck Martin.
"I am just waiting for an offer.," Washington said. "Chuck Martin is still texting and calling."
An offer would change his outlook on the Big Ten program.
"It would be high (interest), I would like to go there. But I have to weigh my options," Washington said.
The Indiana staff were at multiple New Heights games this week. The Hoosier staff is also recruiting his 2018 teammates, wing forward Sid Wilson and center Moses Brown.
Washington has a clear idea on the most important variable in his decision.
"How they let their point guards play," Washington said. "I want to go to a school that lets me play my game, put the ball in my hands and we can go from there."
That is one thing Indiana should have in its favor if the Hoosier staff does jump in with the scholarship offer.
"I liked their little guard, Yogi Ferrell. He played with a lot of heart, just like a New York City guard," Washington said. "He may be the littlest guy on the court but he looks like the biggest guy there."
It's another Big Ten school, however, that may sit best with Washington. Minnesota hosted Washington for a late June visit.
"It was better than expected. Minnesota is a really nice place, and it was a great trip overall." Washington told Scout.com. "All of the coaches are the same, they are real cool. Like (assistant coach) Kimani Young) they all showed me a lot of attention and I built a good relationship with all of them."
Young is the former program director of New Heights, having run the program from 2006-08 and again from 2012-13 before landing a position on Richard Pitino's staff at Florida International.
"I like the way they just let their guards just play, I have a good relationship with the coach and I believe I would do well if I would ever go there," Washington said.
Seton Hall has more than geography working for it.
"I am close to Isaiah Whitehead and I try to (pattern) my game after his," Washington said.
Washington has visited the Big East school and nearby Rutgers. Those two and Minnesota are the only campuses he told us he has visited.
Scouting Notes
Peegs.com senior report Jeff Rabjohns has seen Washington at three different events this summer and offers his scouting report on the senior point guard:
"Quick. Good handle. Strong. Can handle contact. Good vision. Creative passer. Will drive to spots to set up a pass. Undersized. Does get too deep sometimes on drives. Nice jumper. Has dribble pull-up game. Has been hitting 3s here in Vegas."
