I think tariffs with Canada and Mexico are bad policy in general, so if the threat of them makes those counties control the border from trafficking more effectively, and we don't actually impose tariffs, that's a win in my book.

It's funny. The media, Dems, etc. all say that tariffs only hurt the consumer in the importing country. If that's the case, I find it interesting that these other countries are so upset about the tariffs threatened to be imposed on them. If it only hurt the consumers in America, why would they care? Another dumb talking point by the liberal media trying to set the narrative.

I wonder about these tariffs. Wasn’t there going to be blanket tariffs on all countries to get rid of the income tax? So Canada and Mexico do an agreement just to have it fall due to trying to get rid of the income tax?

Right now, Trump is employing tariffs as a negotiating tool. But he has also said that tariffs will replace the income tax.

It's absolutely a negotiating tool, and a good one. Over the years I have learned that you can't take Trump literally most of the time. Saying tariffs will replace the income tax is one of those times. Just campaign hot air.

About 90% of the stuff he has said about tariffs is nonsense, so maybe he wants the foreign leaders to think he is just crazy so they cave to something he wants.

To be fair, politicians in the US should be worried about how policies impact their constituents first.
"This is going to hurt Mexicans" is not a very compelling argument for most Americans.

SMH, not the point. The point is the US politicians mislead the public about the implications of tariffs, just to cause fear and score political points against the president. They assertively state that tariffs only hurt the US consumer and nobody else. That is not entirely true and anyone with a brain knows it. It's why Mexico and Canada immediately caved to just the possibility of them being implemented.

So far it seems to be working.

My sense is that tariffs will only come into play with China ultimately and he’s using the threats to other countries for negotiating. Trump is going to be judged on 1) border security/immigration 2) restructuring the government/cost reductions and 3) negotiating peace in Ukraine and the Middle East.

If inflation stays dialed in at around 2% for the the next two years, those that elected him will likely give him a pass if those three things happen.

I haven't seen anyone assertively state that tariffs don't hurt other countries. Do you have an example? I know Schumer said for example that he should focus on China instead of "attacking our allies" which would seem to suggest that he is being honest that tariffs hurt Americans and our trading partners, no?

I do think he has in mind starting a universal tariff, in conjunction with a corporate and income tax reduction. Scott Bessent has mentioned starting at 2.5% and slowly ramping up over time.
