South Orange, N.J. — Junior Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) scored her first goal of 2023 in her first game of the season and freshman Lily Camacho notched the game-winning goal as the Seton Hall women's soccer team posted its first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Central Connecticut State at Owen T. Carroll Field.

The Pirates (1-1) fell behind early but equalized on Tavana's tally in the 39th minute in the first half. Camacho's first career goal nearly three minutes into the second half served as the game-winner.

How It Happened

Despite allowing the Blue Devils to take a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, the Pirates led 6-3 in shots and had the upper hand in possession. After knocking on the door for a majority of the first half, freshman Gia Milano (Scotch Plains, N.J.) stole the ball and passed it to senior Brina Micheels (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) in the Pirates' attacking third. Micheels then got the ball into the scoring area where it found Tavana, who stayed patient and delivered a right-footed strike past the goalkeeper.

It was 1-1 at halftime and it didn't take long for Seton Hall to take its first lead of the game. A foul on CCSU in the 47th minute set the Pirates up for a free kick in their attacking half of the pitch. Camacho stepped to the ball and drove the ball to the back of the net, giving Seton Hall a 2-1 lead.

The remainder of the match was physical contest that saw the referee issue four yellow cards and one red card. The Pirates held firm though as they carried out their first win of the season.

Inside the Box Score

  • After missing the season opener with an injury, Tavana tallied her sixth career goal and now has 18 career points.
  • After freshman Adria Kitzinger (Ridley Park, Pa.) tallied in the season opener, another Pirate freshman registered her first career score in Camacho.
  • Micheels and Milano both tallied their first assists as Pirates.
  • The Hall finished with more shots (15-7), shots on goal (8-2) and corner kicks (4-0).
