LAST YEAR AGAINST CREIGHTON
Creighton has dominated the all-time series, owning a 14-6 all-time lead. Last season, the Bluejays swept the regular season series, but The Hall bounced them from the BIG EAST Tournament in the quarterfinals.

In their first meeting, Curtessia Dean recorded season-highs of 13 points and nine rebounds, but The Hall fell at Creighton, 83-60, on Jan. 14. The Pirates fared much better in the rematch at Walsh Gym, but the result was ultimately the same. Despite a spirited team-wide effort and a career-high 35 points from Andra Espinoza-Hunter, the Pirates fell in a double-overtime thriller, 97-91, to Creighton on Feb. 20. Mya Bembry (West Orange, N.J.) muscled her way for a layup with 2:37 left in double-overtime to give The Hall a 91-89 lead, but Creighton was able to take advantage with Espinoza-Hunter fouled out and finished the game on a 9-0 run.

In March, Bembry drained a baseline jumper with 2.1 seconds remaining to give The Hall a dramatic, come-from-behind 66-65 victory over Creighton in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals. In a thrilling affair that featured 12 lead changes, the Pirates trailed by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter before mounting a late charge. Creighton's Tatum Rembao hit a three-pointer to give the Bluejays the lead with just 28 seconds left, but the Pirates took their time on their final possession and Park-Lane found Bembry open on the baseline for the game-winning shot.

SCOUTING CREIGHTON
Creighton is coming off a highly successful 2021-22 campaign that saw a final record of 23-10 and an impressive 15-5 mark in BIG EAST play. The Bluejays earned the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, but were upset by the six-seeded Pirates in the quarterfinals. Despite the setback, Creighton went on to win three games in the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual national champion, South Carolina, in the Elite Eight.

This year, the Bluejays were picked to finish second in the 11-team BIG EAST according to the Preseason coaches' poll. Both Lauren Jensen and Emma Ronsiek were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, while Morgan Maly was an Honorable Mention. Creighton returns four starters from a year ago, but lost Tatum Rembao, a team leader and Pirate killer.

This season, Creighton has been ranked for most of the season and enters Wednesday's contest with a 10-5 overall record and a 4-3 mark in BIG EAST play. The Bluejays started the season by winning their first seven games, but is just 3-5 since. After being upset at home by Providence on Jan. 4, Creighton bounced back in a huge way with a 26-point victory over Marquette on Sunday. Jensen, Maly and Ronsiek are all averaging over 12 points per game.

UP NEXT
Seton Hall will enjoy a bye week before returning to action on Thursday, Jan. 19 when it hosts Connecticut in Walsh Gym. Tip time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET. The contest will be televised nationally on SNY. John Makuch and Justin Nicosia will describe the action for WSOU FM.

This is going to be a very tough match-up against Creighton on the road. If the Hall is going to have the special season we all want this is the kind of game they have to win.

Playing UConn next is almost a sure L so you don't want to have a 2 game losing streak in conference.

If we can beat Creighton on the road we can beat anyone in the league outside of Conn.

This is a tough road game for sure. This would be a solid resume building win. In addition they could expect even more votes next week before the UConn game. Great chance for our fans to check them out on FS1. They just have to play their game and limit Creighton’s threes.

34-22 Creighton at halftime. Every time the Pirates start to build momentum, a turnover or bad miss just gives it right back. Hope for some halftime adjustments but if the team is 0-4 in games they’re down at halftime this year then this would be a welcome change of pace.

Down 34-22 at the half. that's as poor as they have played in a long time. Most of the team are having off nights. Tentative shooting and very slow on their closeouts. Creighton 5-11 from three and SHU is 0-6. Game is not over as they have the ability to turn it around. Hope playing on FS1 is not affecting their play?

The women are having about the same results in Omaha as the men.

63-39 at end 3rd. Looking a lot like the mens game out there last week unfortunately. A few players having off nights. Gap was 28 then Hall went on 8-0 run to cut it to 20 then once CU’s “First line” came back in the game they got 2 quick baskets to end the quarter. Disappointing result but Creighton is coming off an Elite 8 appearance so a loss here was not unexpected, only the score.

Lol, that was just as bad as they could ever play. The good I guess was Cooks 20 points. Everything else was terrible. You cut them some slack because they appeared to be a bit tired after their road game at Providence on Sunday. So maybe the travel caught up with them. Usually, you throw the game tape out and move on. In this case they need to Study everything Creighton did to them because that is the model for beating Seton Hall. Hard to imagine that even mighty UConn will shoot the three ball better next week than Creighton tonight (12-25). On the flipside SHU was 0-12 from three. Park-Lane kind of pressing the entire night, but really the entire team was at fault in this one. Not sure if playing on FS1 unnerved a couple of the gals.

They need to play as good a game vs UConn at home as possible and keep it close. Most important if they want to make the NCAA Tournament, they have to go to work on defending the three for the rest of the season. It's the Achilles heel not just of the team, but really the Program. Aside from that they have a solid and respectable program.

OMAHA, NEB. – Graduate student Sidney Cooks (Kenosha, Wis.) had a team-high 20 points, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell at Creighton, 75-53, on Wednesday.

The Pirates never led in this one as Creighton opened the game with a 9-2 spurt and never looked back. The Pirates finished the game without a made three-point field goal, while the Bluejays were 12-for-25 from downtown. It's only the second game The Hall has lost since the day after Thanksgiving.

Cooks finished with a team-best 20 points on 9-for-17 shooting to go with six rebounds. Senior Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) was the lone other Pirate to reach double-figures in scoring. She finished with 14 to go with seven assists.

THE STORY:
Seton Hall had difficulty with Creighton's defensive intensity to start the game, connecting on just one of its first seven shots while the Bluejays built a 9-2 lead. Creighton was 7-for-12 in the opening quarter and hit a trio of three-pointers, while The Hall shot just 33% and was 0-for-3 from downtown. The Bluejays took a 17-10 lead into the second.

The Hall opened the second quarter with six straight points to cut their deficit to just one point, 17-16, but Creighton responded with a 7-0 run of their own to boost their lead to 24-16 and prompt a Seton Hall timeout with 5:03 to go before halftime. The Hall trailed 34-22 at the break with the Pirates 0-for-6 from three-point range after 20 minutes.

The Bluejays made 10 of their first 11 shots to open the second half including 5-for-6 from three-point range. By the media break of the third quarter, Creighton had grabbed a commanding 56-30 advantage. The Hall had an 8-0 run later in the third, but never cut their deficit to fewer than 20 points the rest of the way.

THE NUMBERS:
  • Seton Hall was 21-for-55 (38.2%) from the floor for the game, while Creighton was 31-for-55 (56.4%). The Hall was 0-for-12 from three-point range, while the Bluejays were 12-for-25 (48.0%).
  • Cooks had a team-high 20 points on 9-for-17 shooting to go with six rebounds.
  • Creighton out-rebounded The Hall, 33-to-28, including a 8-to-6 edge on the offensive glass.
