Do not get me wrong - I must admit that I loved the excitement that SG brought to our team for the two years he played for us. And I was honestly very disappointed when he announced at the end of last season that he was leaving. But the old adage that everything works out in the long run for a reason is certainly no truer than in this case however. His leaving, opened up a scholarship for DG and boy is he ever taking advantage of it! He is not the scorer that SG was, but his excellent, better defense saves just about as many more points that SG ay have scored at the other end. And just about as important as we all know that the locker room imploded last year, even though of may not have been SG's fault, DG has however been in contrast a calming influence. If we make the NCAAs this year, making this trade could be one of the biggest reasons for it happening! GO DG! GO PIRATES!

For what this team needed the trade has become a no brainer.

Plus, and I am not laying the blame at Gibbs' feet, there was enough to go around last year everywhere, the locker room is a far better place now.

These kids love and admire each other better than any group in recent memory.

Dan,
You are closer to the flame than the rest of us, so your assessment of the team chemistry has credibility. If true, that is music to my ears. We all enjoy watching the skills of these athletes, but if a team has character than one can have real pride in his alma mater. So far, I am loving it.

I agree with Pesto's analysis of the DG/SG development. There is no need to bash Sterling. I enjoyed his long range heroics as much as anyone. However, the defense, leadership, and cohesion that Gordan has delivered is a huge part of our success.

Go Pirates!

I post far more stuff regarding post game conversations with the players on the Trove than here. So our subscribers are much more aware of the behind the scenes goings on than on this board.

Suffice to say that the locker room, so important regarding chemistry could not be a better one. And only partially because of the winning. These kids hang with each other all the time. They love and respect each other.

If last year was as bad as it could get. Than this year the roster has done a 180.

Well said 76. If you watch this team, and you are our age, you can't help but think of the glory teams. We are not there. We have been at this door before and turned away. But we are so tough, so determined. How many times did a MQ kid get in the paint last night and have nothing to do - too well covered to shoot, no big open, so he had to dribble thru or hit a guy in the corner. And if that corner guy got it, he was closed out.

And it never hurts to be so damned EXCITING. Last night had so many highlights. That shot blocking fest for a few minutes, the barrage of threes, some of Isaiah's or Angel's passes (man, I love talking about Angel the passer). Hell, even some of the rebounds were entertaining just via the determination displayed.

If you love basketball or care about SHU, you are missing it if you don't watch this team. I say lots of hoops fans will start coming again just to see great basketball like they used to in the PJ years.

DG has been solid for us. A guard who provides senior leadership, has experience in the tournament, and knows what it takes to get there.
A defense first guy who probably averages close to 2 charges taken a game and can also give you close to 10 points a night.

Anyone wishing for a first round game in Brooklyn vs. Uconn? Wouldn't that be great?

Completely agree. Wasn't UConn one of the teams that listed a few Big East programs they would still want to play and left our name off. I think Syracuse was among them as well. I hope we draw Cuse or Uconn this year and deliver some Ezekiel 25:17 on them.

Last year we had two starting guards (no longer with the team) who were not very good defenders. We also had too many shoot first rather than pass first players. This year we are winning primarily because of our defense (and rebounding) and also because of better ball distribution. So in that case yes the team is better as presently constituted than it was last year. If you add to this Gordon's leadership qualities we come up way ahead.

Derrick is a very tough smart player. I am as glad as anyone that he is here, but more so because in many ways his leadership makes this team more fun to watch. I love it when this kid takes a charge or steals a pass. It is a major part of our game and off of the bench no less.

I would take this trade again in a heartbeat , and without any time thinking about it. We lose a great 3pt shooter, but you gain an elite defender , a guy that can get to the basket and finish, and a glue guy.
And since we are on the topic , I would have traded JS for a box of peanuts.

Good points.
Gordon is much more of an asset to the program than Gibbs.

In addition to the improvement on defense and in the locker room, Gordon is a much better
penetrator and slasher than Gibbs.
Last year's team with Gibbs and Sina, showed very little penetration and too much peripheral stagnation.
Gordon also has a pass first mentality.
