This student loan debate is typical of America today. Instead of addressing the root cause of a problem, our politicians and media want to target a symptom.

The symptom is high student loan debt, but the root cause is the exorbitant cost of higher education. We should figure out why colleges and universities have hiked their tuition far higher than the rate of inflation over the last 20-30 years, and do something about it.

Of course, that's a more intensive process and you'll have to fight the lobbyists. So in true American fashion, our "leaders" take the easy way out, demagogue the issue and bait people into thinking student loan debt is the real issue, when it isn't.

One reason is it is subsidized by the government.

Pell grants alone are $31B. It has been as high as $44B

The total nut the feds hands out is $63B

The total Higher Ed industry is $582B

Roughly a 11% subsidy.

Possibly, albeit, she's on the other team and so I'd have to trans to a woman. 🙃

I do think all student loans should be subsidized. Interest shouldn’t accrue when a student is active.

Perhaps some, but many should not be.

My DW worked in financial aid. She saw many underqualified students taking out $75,000+ of loans. They had little to no chance of graduating and hence slim prospects for a decent job. At best they should have been in trade school. Kids like that are bound for a life at Walmart saddled with enormous debt.

Do you know of any bank that would approve an unsecured loan to a 18 year old with no work experience and poor grades in high school?

Some of the aforementioned students would show up at her office asking "What's with this letter that says I owe all this money"? I kid you not.

Dumbing down of America is in full swing.

I put most of the blame back on the parents. As a parent, you want your children to have as many options as possible.

But supporting insane student loans, when there are less expensive options to either pursue college degree or something that is a better fit.

Trump wins CPAC straw poll with 62%. He only grows stronger. As I have said this often, he is the Republican nominee unless he gets indicted. With that being said, Trump actually said he will continue his campaign even if he gets indicted.

His comments concerning Russia are very dangerous His continuing dislike for NATO and his comments that he will end the Ukraine Russian War in a day is not only dangerous, it signals to Putin to continue the war until he becomes President to get better terms. How is that possible? discontinuing support militarily for Ukraine.

Trump will not be the nominee, so your hypothetical what if's are unlikely and so far off anyway. Larry Hogan said something on MTP this week that follows what the plan is and then he acted on it. He said "it's not a matter of candidates entering the primary, but the importance of when to drop out", which signals that the plan is to fall in line and do anything to prevent his nomination. Then Hogan dropped out.

CPAC is not the end all...Ted Cruz won the straw poll in 2016.

No surprise that he won the CPAC poll.

Kinda like going to Lexington and asking who your favorite basketball team is.

I hope you are right that Trump will not be the nominee. But your assurance and you dismissing that he won’t be is just wrong. If you can’t acknowledge that he is at least has 50-50 chance of becoming the nominee, you are not living in reality.

Trump’s support remains essentially unchanged.

Okay, I’m not living in reality….lol

But you are the one with their undergarments getting twisted for something that can hypothetically happen two years from now.

Disagree…his support HAS changed as has the parties strategy.

That said, as much as I like Hogan, that choice for him is very easy as he wasn't going to win the nomination.

The party is split right now between a group of reasonable people who want to move on from Trump and a group of people who don't, but republican's actively coordinating to make sure Trump is not the nominee or "rigging" if you will? I wonder how the die hard Trump fans will handle republicans "rigging" the primary against him. He's going to be a problem if he is the nominee, and probably a bigger problem if he isn't.

Do you really think Trump loyalists will vote for a Democratic candidate? Would Trump launch himself as a third party candidate with his own money? No to both.

They just won't vote if Trump isn't on the ballot. Wouldn't be his own money either.
He will have more than enough in campaign funds to run as a 3rd party and cause plenty of chaos.

You think he's just walk away and support the nominee? You think he'd just donate the unused Trump campaign funds to the GOP? He's takin g the ship down with him.

I don’t see that in any large scale. The extremes of both parties vote because they hate the other side.

He won’t support anyone but himself. He just might be on the ship all by himself.

Wait a sec

Joe Bidunce is President and you’re worried about Republicans ?

The Big Lebowski What GIF by MOODMAN

Yes? I am concerned about what is best for the country for the 2024 cycle.

Trump in the race is bad for the country.
Ok Stalin.

Then you’d also say Bidunce in the race is worse for the country based on his horrific record so far, right?

You fascists crack me up

Speaking of nut-jobs:

The OP and his fellow cultists only focus on what the media tells them to.

They have no idea how batshit crazy the Dem Party has gone.

It’s not the Democrat Party we grew up with. It’s a freak show collection of radical nutjobs led by the Grand Wizard Puppet of insanity, Bidunce

Sane moderate Dem pols have left that Party

The last normal national Dem Pol was Bill Clinton. Hillary is a demon but Bill actually governed with the country’s best intentions.

Not sure I see that as a reason to charge interest while a student. I do see that as a reason that all loans should be co-signed by a qualifying adult. Estranged from your parents? Well then I agree with the sentiment that an unqualified individual should not be able to secure massive debt for school. Find a less expensive option.

I don’t argue that loan underwriting should be less critical. I just argue that when loans are reasonably expected to be repaid, there is little reason to charge interest when said student in need isn’t necessarily working as much as getting an education.

Hey, let it accrue but if a payment plan is enacted upon graduation or end of studies, and paid back properly, that accrued interest is never charged.

The whole college model is prime for disruption over the next ten years and some will pivot and re-invent and some won't survive. Funding will have to adjust as well. We are already seeing that.

Overall enrollment has flattened out and started to decline. Combine that with more students choosing schools with partial or full on-line curriculums. That Starbucks in the Student Center is not going to be a "thing" going forward. We are re-producing at a slower rate, so it's just math there as well.

Now add the projected impact of AI on some of these degrees and careers.

https://www.bestcolleges.com/research/college-enrollment-statistics/

The pandemic caused many college students to shift to online learning. In Fall 2020:[7]
  • Roughly 14 million college students — 74% of total enrollment — were enrolled in at least one distance education course. In 2019, just 37% of students were enrolled in online courses.
  • Almost 46% of college students were enrolled exclusively in online courses, representing a 151% increase from the previous year.
  • About 29% were enrolled in at least one but not all online courses.

Your juvenile insults aside, yes. I think we would be better off if Biden were not in the race for 2024 as well.
I’m not so sure about this. Biden is not a great speaker and he is pretty damn old. But what he does have gong for him is that he is responsible and a moderate. Quite frankly, he has passed quite a few good pieces of legislation and has done a great job on Ukraine issue. Biden needs to dump Harris and get a very good VP. VP don’t mean much normally. But next election, it will matter a whole bunch.

Having a D who is from the progressive wing of the party would be a disaster. Biden runs and wins. The next Dem candidate will be Shapiro from PA who looks like he is the real deal.

The only Republican candidate Biden will beat next year is Trump.

I like Shapiro, but he's been Governor for exactly three months. Need to pump the brakes a bit, but then again, the Dem bench is so weak, he looks pretty awesome.

Just my opinion. I do think he is way too old to run. Only person I think he would be able to beat would be Trump and don't really see either of those two as being fit for office to carry out a 4 year term.

I think the best thing for the country would be if Trump gets indicted, bows out of the race and Biden announces he will make way for the next generation and work towards aggressively finding the middle ground on key issues to finish out his term. 2024 candidates can start over rather than it being about Trump or Hunter.

Trump is the candidate for the Republicans. Even if he gets indicted in NY for the Stormy Daniels hush money, he will still run because no one cares about that. Now an obstruction indictment for the Documents could or should be a game changer. But I suspect Trump will not bow out of the race. His plan is to become President and pardon himself. Nothing is going to change with Trump. He will continue on.

And since Biden is the only person that can beat Trump, then I want Biden. I certainly would prefer Biden over Warren, Bernie, and a lot of other candidates.
