Trevon Duval talking to Kentucky coach John Calipari, still considering high schools

After a summer on the AAU circuit that has experts wondering if he's the best player in the class of 2017, Trevon Duval further established his status as an elite prospect on Saturday at the Big Strick Classic in the Bronx with strong performances in the dunk contest as well as the national game. And if you ask the five-star guard, he certainly belongs in that best player conversation.

"I think I am the best player in the class," Duval said. "I think I work the hardest. I think it's all shown on the court. I think I've shown everyone that I'm the best player in the class."

Whether he's the No. 1 player in the class of 2017 is up for debate — Rivals has him at No. 5 in its latest rankings. But there's no question that Duval is one of the hottest recruits in the country. Arizona is the most recent school to offer Duval, who grew up in Delaware but is originally from New York. Kansas, Louisville, Maryland, Syracuse, UConn, Seton Hall and Rutgers are among other squads that have offered Duval as well.

Duval, who averaged 15.9 points per game last season as St. Benedict's won the Prep A title, says he isn't sure where he'll be playing high school ball in the winter. He says the idea of playing in big national prep tournaments appeals to him, but playing for a state tournament is something he would be interested in as well.

A pair of colleges that haven't offered yet are starting to get involved with Duval — Kentucky and Duke. Both blue blood programs have paid close attention to Duval over the summer, and he's been in touch with Wildcat coach John Calipari recently.

"I talked to Coach Cal today," Duval said on Saturday. "I'm supposed to talk to him more later on."

Duval has also been in touch with last year's NJ.com Player of the Year, Isaiah Briscoe, who will play for Calipari and Kentucky in the winter.

"I talk to Isaiah all the time. About schools and just basketball in general, how he's doing," Duval said. "Kentucky is really appealing to everyone. A great school that has pros all the time."

While certain schools are making pushes for Duval, he isn't handicapping any favorites just yet and he doesn't have a timetable for his decision.

"Everyone is recruiting me the hardest," Duval said. "From the first schools I had like SETON HALL all the way to my most recent schools like Arizona. Everyone is recruiting me really hard."

Seton Hall was one of the first schools to offer Duval, and he had praise for the Big East program's recruiting efforts.

"Seton Hall is still strong, they recruit me all the time. I see them at all my games all the time," Duval said. "They're doing a really good job, that's why they're on my list."
