Part 2

Jon Rothstein “Never speculate on speculation”

“Everybody wants to have a perfect situation where there's roster continuity. You're taking a certain amount of players every year from high school, a certain amount from the portal; perfect doesn't exist anymore. You have to deal with it,” he said.

Helping Holloway to run his program is a staff light on high major experience, but high in the head coach’s esteem and recent success, with Ryan Whalen and Rysheen Davis following from Saint Peter’s and Corey Lowery joining from Lincoln University of the D-II ranks.

"The way I look at it, Shaheen brought two assistants who are seasoned veterans that were part of a team and a staff at Saint Peter's that went to the Elite Eight, that's the only thing that matters,” Rothstein said, highlighting the rigorous preparation and coaching on display during the Peacocks’ run last season..............

Where I think Rothstein is off base is whether the current staff of assistants can recruit the caliber of player needed to compete in the B.E. No one is denying that the assistant coaches who came over to us from SPU did an outstanding job In preparing the Peacocks for its improbable run to the Elite 8 but coaching is only one part of their job , which includes player development and recruiting.

But is it recruiting chops or NIL. Seems like we are getting more four and five star players on visits, then during Willards tenure.

Until this NIL situation is improved (if ever?) it's going to be tough to truly evaluate anything with recruiting prowess. The best recruiters in the world will be out-bid. I don't know how many of these good recruits are going to pass up money no matter how good the recruiter or HC may be.

Maybe we can do better on the next level of player, coach them up, then hope we don't get out-bid when they prove they're good and lured to transfer.

It's not a good situation. College Basketball has become a joke in many ways with these things.

Lane Kiffin the head football coach at Ole Miss announced recently that their NIL fund raising had reached $10 million and made this comment which is so true “ The ability to sign and keep players is determined by NIL. Kiffin , let me add , has been critical of NIL and it’s impact on college sports.

It’s a joke. An utter joke. The point was for the players to market themselves and let whoever can earn a deal have the ability to make one.

Not have the schools building up treasuries to just dispense under some false pretense with no “work” done by the player.

It’s a necessary evil if you want to compete at the high major level. Some kids get legitimate NIL deals and in my opinion that’s a great thing but the vast majority of payments are pay for play.

The Genie is out of the bottle and there is no way to put him back. NIL in its current form is here to stay and will likely only get worse . We know that one of the targets the players want is a share of revenues generated by the schools from their sports programs and you know that a C.B.A. will likely become a target as well.
