US Soccer may allow players to kneel for anthem again

President Trump said he will tune out the NFL and the United States national soccer team if their players take a knee during the national anthem.

The president in a series of tweets and retweets on Saturday backed comments made by GOP Reps. Jim Jordan and Matt Gaetz about the US Soccer Federation last week repealing a rule enacted in 2017 requiring players to stand during the anthem.

The ban was rescinded because of the nationwide protests that erupted in the wake of George Floyd’s death by a Minneapolis police officer who pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.

“It has become clear that this policy was wrong and detracted from the important message of Black Lives Matter,” U.S. Soccer announced on Wednesday.

“I won’t be watching much anymore!” Trump wrote on Twitter, linking to a Gaetz interview with a Pensacola, Fla., television station.

In a tweet, Gaetz of Florida, said he’s “rather the US not have a soccer team than have a soccer team that won’t stand for the National Anthem.”

“You shouldn’t get to play under our flag as our national team if you won’t stand when it is raised,” he added.

Trump also linked to a posting from Jordan that highlighted a report on the soccer team in a Bowling Green, Ohio, newspaper.

“And it looks like the NFL is heading in that direction also, but not with me watching!,”the president wrote.

Earlier this month, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was “wrong” for not “listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest.”

Goodell did not mention by name former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who took a knee during the anthem during the 2016 preseason.

Kaepernick, who has been blacklisted by the league, said he was doing it to protest police brutality.

Trump, outraged at players who took a knee, called on NFL owners to fire athletes who do so.

In a September 2017 speech, Trump suggested owners respond by saying: “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he’s fired. He’s fired!”

And why is this important. True fans of the both football events could care less if someone stands or kneels. Sporting events are just that, diversions from real life. What is important is what is in your heart. As many have written democracy is hard but a true believer understands that even though someone believes in something that is totally against what you stand for, they have the right to express it. So Trump has his right and the players have theirs. As for many if the game or match is a good one they will watch it.

The problem is not all of the players have the right to express their opinions. Drew Brees just got destroyed by the media, teammates, other athletes, fans, and more for expressing his opinion. The family received death threats. Who stood up against that? A teammate? Someone in the media? Nope. The same brotherhood people hate about the cops is acceptable in athletes it seems. Which athlete has been outspoken about a teammate who raped someone? Which athlete has had something to say about a teammate who is an abuser in domestic violence cases? Dislike kneeling for the anthem everyone comes out.

One of brees own black teammates who called him out for his comment stood up for him and defended him, specifically saying that he talked with brees, helped him understand why his statement was problematic, and that he has a good heart and simply didn’t have the right perspective and words to express his feelings in a context-appropriate way. High profile anchors in flagship sports channel shows defended Brees right to his initial statement AND applauded him for his follow up statement. I know it’s an easy knee jerk reaction to amp up the victim card levels, but he WAS stood up for and defended by the exact types of people you said he got no support from. Some news cycles only care about outrage, though. If yours didn’t show you the support and follow-up, then get out there to do some research and expand where you’re getting your stories from, that’s all.

Read what I said. who defended him from death threats? They accepted his apology. Nobody said anything about the death threats. That’s a nice response to a question nobody asked.
