I was reading the Christie thread and saw the reference to Stranger Things so figured I'd start a thread given all the quality shows out there, from Netflix Originals, to HBO/ Showtime, to FX.

I recently finished Season 2 of Bloodline, which is a Netflix Original, and highly recommend it.

I'm also through episode 7 of The Night Of, which is an HBO Series that only consists of 1 season (8 episodes) and definitely would recommend that one too.

I've heard good things about Stranger Things so maybe I'll start that one next.

I watched the Night Of and really liked it. Some of the plot lines seemed strange to me (Chandra kissing Naz for example, and some more stuff you'll see in Ep 8). I thought the acting was tremendous by Turturro, Bill Camp, Michael K Williams, etc. I was pretty satisfied with the ending. It brought to light the story of Kalief Browder, who you can research if you're interested.

I am going to watch the finale of Stranger Things tonight. I am typically not a sci-fi guy but it's really good. I keep thinking of it as some combination of Stand by Me/Goonies/ET. I think you will see what I mean if you grew up watching those movies.

the Pablo Escobar story, Narcos, is on Netflix and season 2 is being released in a few days. I'll throw that recommendation out there as well. Need to get back on Bloodlines, wife gave up after a few eps but I was liking it.

We are in a golden age of TV where high quality actors have come back to the small screen.

Just finished the finale and was not disappointed. IDK what kind of TV awards are out there now with the dawn of these non-network series, but I'm sure they exist and I would bet a mortgage payment Turturro wins one.

And just googled Kalief Browder. The name didn't resonate with me, but once I read the story I remembered reading about him.

I'm not at all a Sci Fi guy either, but I'll take your word re: your thoughts on Stranger Things.

American Horror Story is an FX "anthology" series that IMO has had two very good seasons. The first, titled Murder House, and the 4th (Freak Show). I think Lady Gaga won an award for her role in Hotel, but I bailed early after they introduced Zombies to the show.

I love the Showtime series. Most are good. If anyone else calls me a Rutgers fan, I am gonna send ray Donovan for a visit with them.

I agree the level of TV with all the cable or streaming stations has never been better. I think that most of the current non network shows are only 12 weeks or so rather than 30 on the major networks. This enables them to do quality productions rather than fillers. The only problem is not having the time to watch all of these excellent shows being produced.

By the way one of you guys recommended Fargo in a prior thread for which I have to thank you. That may have become my favorite and I can't wait for the new season which I'm told will be set about 5 years after season #1 (approx 2010). Right now I'm about halfway thru the most recent season of House of Cards.

Two into Narcos, a Netflix original. Very good so far.

Curious what previous posters thoughts are on Bloodline and The Night Of.

The Night Of is the best show I've watched this year. They pretty much nailed the finale, with only a few squabbles. Such a smart show that shows what a terrible justice system we have and how it ruins everyone involved in it.

Turturro hopefully nailed his Emmy nomination with that final speech.

Saving Narcos & Bloodline for after bball season lol

Mr. Robot is getting super intense as the season ends. Another great show with a very unique vision, and plenty to say about our society (fsociety!)

Definitely agree on The Night Of and Turturro's overall performance, particularly his closing argument. I was talking to a co-worker the other day about how there is some opportunity for a 2nd season with the way things were left, and ironically read yesterday that the creators were thinking about it, so we'll see. I have my thoughts on what sort of story line it could be, but don't want to post too much and spoil anything from season 1 for anyone who might be planning to watch it.

Re: Mr. Robot, I can't seem to find Season 1 on On-Demand or anywhere else for that matter but plan to start it whenever it resurfaces somewhere.

it's available on Amazon Prime for free, and should be on Blu-Ray/DVD by now.

Also, when I said The Night Of was the best show I've watched this year, that does not include GoT, which is so head & shoulders above all other TV that it shouldn't even be in the conversation. The per episode budget alone makes it unfair to compare, nevermind the actual quality of the writing, acting, efx, etc.

I started GoT after season two and watched both seasons on one snowy weekend but for some reason lost interest, though I realize how popular it is. Kind of wish I stuck with it, but can always revisit it I guess.

One show that I feel like I was one of the only people I know to embrace was Boardwalk Empire. (**** If anyone plans to watch it don't read beyond here).

It definitely had some peaks and valleys, particularly after they killed off Darmody, who I thought was the best character, but I thought it finished strong and thought the ending was pretty solid.

I picked up a Time Life magazine about the history of American gangsters and everyone on the show had a section dedicated to them and the show reflected what I read about them pretty accurately. The only main character who I think was fictional was Nucky.

Thrones is probably my favorite as it shows human nature's thirst for power and the repercussions that flow from it.

I binged watched Narcos the last two weeks. I highly recommend Narcos. Extremely well acted. I love that half of it is in Spanish with subtitles. Anyone who knows Spanish will be entertained with the Colombian slant on words. It is interspersed with real life photos and footage. First episode will have you hooked.

I watched 5 episodes of Night of but just didn't stay with it.

Nucky apparently was a mixture of a few real people from that era.

I loved the show too, despite its small flaws. There were times where it didn't seem to have a driving force or direction, and then the abrupt ending (so Weiner could start working on the abortion known as "Vinyl") really seemed rushed in that last season.

Chalky was the man, as was Omar and Freddie. Michael Wiliams always gets to play badasses.

Yea. He's great. But seems to play the same character in every show (a least the ones I've seen him in). He's in an episode of Law and Order SVU and plays the same type of badass role in that even.

Mr. Robot makes the paranoid more so.

And Narcos is a thrill ride for those who liked The Wire and can either understand Spanish or don't mind subtitles.

Both awesome shows.

Anyone watching Luke Cage? What about Atlanta?

Yeah, I was all of the marvel shows. 3 episodes in on Cage and love it so far.

I have Atlanta on DVRbut havent had a chance to watch yet.

Watching 6th episode of Cage and I really like it so far. Less superhero/super villain than Jessica Jones and Daredevil. But much more cultural. And super street/gritty.

Was told to watch Atlanta by a coworker. Hope I can get it all on demand.

Based on the reviews here, my wife and I have been binge watching The Night Of this week and finished Episode 6 last night. Really have enjoyed it thus far...It does provide a real earthy and realistic perspective of the criminal justice system....the transformation Naz goes through is pretty startling. We'll finish it up tonight or tomorrow so really looking forward to the way it ends.

Figured I'd revisit this since the election is over. Been watching Black Mirror on Netflix. Very good IMO. I hadn't heard of it until recently, but the common theme is the impact technology has on our daily lives. It's an anthology series, but one where even episodes within the same series aren't at all connected. If you were a Twilight Zone fan I'd give it a try, just replace aliens with cell phones and computers.

I've heard good things about black mirror but the first episode creeped me out... didn't watch any more.

Same boat. Someone give me a reason to keep going...
I'm assuming you are referring to Season 1. Episode 1? Yea, I can see how that would freak people out. I'd recommend checking out some of season 3. That's where I've been focusing most of my attention. 3:3 is very good, but I've enjoyed every episode from that season. I'm through episode 5 so far.

Best current show on TV. While the mysteries were easy to solve in advance of their reveals, the season was still great b/c of everything else. Top notch acting of course from Wood, Harris, Hopkins, Newton & Wright. Movie-level efx & production. HBO didnt skimp on a thing.

The finale delivered. It gave answers to the mysteries, opened up some new questions, had plenty of action, and left us wanting more.for season 2. Everything a finale should do. A little slow at times (as was the whole season), but I still loved it. I want to say more but i dont want to spoil.

Exorcist is a crazy show on Fox. Season 1 episode 10 is on tonight. 9pm.

Just watched the OA on Netflix which I really recommend. SciFi mystery story with supernatural themes as well.

Fair warning it is a show that is really, really out there. Getting some very good reviews and some terrible ones which I can honestly understand. For example without spoiling anything, I thought the last scene was very powerful but some laugh it off.

You can knock it out in a day or two so I think its worth the watch regardless.

Finished three episodes of The Crown....gonna binge watch the seven remaining ones today and tomorrow. Great history lesson.

SHAMELESS there is no other show like it.
I'm assuming you mean the US version? Wife loves it, I have to leave the room when it's on. lol Just a little over the top for me.

I finished all the episodes of Black Mirror. Pretty much enjoyed all of them. It's a shame they chose the one they did for Season 1, Episode 1, because it sounds like it turned a lot of people off to the entire series.

Finished Bloodlines last week and halfway through Narcos...thanks for the tips! Both great. Amazing that Escobar's business had that much impact on the Colombian economy.

Just saw that the upcoming season of Bloodlines will be the last. Not sure when it starts, but can't wait for it.

For those that weren't scared off by Season 1, Episode 1 of Black Mirror, I also saw there will be at least a season 4 in the future.

Makes sense for Bloodlines...you can only do so much and keep the core family intact. I'll have to check out Black Mirror.

Watched the first series of Peaky Blinders over the past few days.

Each episode kept getting better.

Btw, Cillian Murphy (scarecrow from dark knight trilogy) is an awesome actor.... He was also in a great independent Irish film The Wind That Shakes The Barley about the Irish Rebellion and subsequent Irish Civil War.

Peaky Blinders kicks ass. Sometimes u gotta be patient to get to the good stuff, & the show is super stylized & completely over the top, but it's fun and beautifully shot.

Tom Hardy is amazing on it (duh), & I've heard Taboo is more of the same from him.

The end of episode 6 from the first series was very good. I was surprised. Plus the juxtaposition of the reactions towards Grace by the Campbell and Tommy. Awesome.
