MANALAPAN, NJ. – Consistently showing the ability to make shots has become the hallmark of any successful team in the sport which makes CJ Wilcher a valuable commodity this spring. The Rivals150 junior discussed what he brings to the floor, the select schools standing out and which programs could be the next to host him.

“My ability to score the ball consistently,” he said about what the college coaches respect about his game. “They like the person that I am, too, with just cheering on my teammates and that I am not all about myself.”

DePaul, Nebraska, St. John’s and Xavier have been his most recent offers, as Harvard and Yale have remained in the picture. However, Wilcher told Rivals.com that Xavier has been the most active within his recruitment as they completed an in-home visit with him on the first allowable date this spring.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Harvard/Yale (academic schools): “Me and my dad talk about it all the time. We are not worried about the school’s conference but about the fit and the philosophy. Before it was about not wanting to stay home but if it is the best fit for me, both academically, basketball-wise and within the community, that is where I will go.”

Nebraska: “He (Fred Hoiberg) is saying how I could fit the NBA style of play that is going to be implemented into their team and being able to fit in, play my game fully and he has talked to me dad, too.”

St. John’s: “He (Mike Anderson) called me a few days ago. It was cool for him to reach out to me after he got the job, it means a lot. The message to me, of course, offensively, that I can score the ball, but also about the energy that I bring and how I keep my teammates up.”

Xavier: “Coming in as a freshman and just earning my keep. I can score the ball in different ways now and just come in and score the ball but also be a leader. Keep my energy high. They just talk about the impact that I would have if I were to go there.”

WHAT'S NEXT & RIVALS' REACTION

Official visits have not been set, though there are a few schools that Wilcher is hoping to see. “I am probably planning on visiting Xavier and Providence. Maybe, Yale, I just talked to their head coach today,” he set. “I am planning on visiting there, and maybe Nebraska.”

From there, a timetable for a decision remains unclear. “There is going to be a lot of talking with my parents and my little brother and see how they feel about it and how I feel about it,” Wilcher said. “I couldn’t tell you the time whenever I could commit, I don’t really know the best time for that.”

A smart, tough, and confident wing that can really shoot the ball with distance, Wilcher has seen a spike within his recruitment in recent weeks. Half of the Big East is active within it and while there could be still a few months to go before a decision is made, Xavier tracks as one of the leaders whenever the time permits.
