Wow Mexico, better cheap shot artists than soccer players. What a garbage display by Mexico.

That said, maybe the best performance I’ve ever seen by an American side.

US win over Mexico cut short by homophobic chants on night of four red cards

By Associated Press

LAS VEGAS — Four players were ejected and the match was cut short by the referee after repeated homophobic chants Thursday night.

The United States’ 3-0 victory over Mexico for a spot Sunday in the CONCACAF Nations League final against Canada will be remembered as much for the ugliness as for two goals by Christian Pulisic and one by Ricardo Pepi.

Americans Weston McKennie and Sergiño Dest were ejected by Salvadoran referee Iván Barton along with Mexicans César Montes and Gerardo Arteaga during the testy second half.

“These are rivalry games. These are derby games. Things like this happen across the world and in no way am I embarrassed,” B.J. Callaghan said after his first game as U.S. interim coach. “It comes from a good place. They care about each other so much in that locker room that they’re standing up for each other. Sometimes does it have an issue where we take a red card? Yeah, but when you know where it comes from, you can accept it and it’s a learning lesson for us.”

Play was halted in the 90th minute because of homophobic chants. When action resumed, 12 minutes of stoppage time were signaled but resumed chants caused Barton to end the match in the eighth minute added minute.

FIFA fined Mexico 100,000 Swiss francs ($108,000) in January for anti-gay chants by fans at two games,

“In terms of the chant, I want to make it very clear first and foremost, for our beliefs and our culture, it has no place in the game,” Callaghan said. “It has no place in our value system.”

McKennie and Dest are suspended for thes final. Luca de la Torre and Joe Scally are possible replacements.

“It’s definitely a blow,” Tim Weah said. “It comes with the game. I know the red cards are definitely a bummer, but it happens. Aggressive match tonight.”

Striker Folarin Balogun made his debut after the 21-year-old decided to play for the U.S. over England and Nigeria.

“The boys told me it was going to be intense, but I’m definitely still shocked by the events,”. said Balogun, who at one point was shoved to the field. “I was just on the floor because I was in pain, but when I looked up I just saw so many people around and I knew my teammates were just trying to defend me,”

Making his first start for club or country since April 15, Pulisic put the U.S. ahead in the 37th minute and doubled the lead in the 46th. He has 25 goals in 59 international appearances, including four goals against Mexico. Pepi scored in the 79th, five minutes after replacing Bologun.

With its first three-goal victory over Mexico in 23 years, the U.S. stretched its unbeaten streak against El Tri to six (three wins, three draws), matching the Americans’ longest, from 2011-15.

The U.S. went ahead when Gio Reyna poked the ball off Montes and then while prone, poked it forward off Jorge Sánchez. Pulisic burst behind the defenders, took a pair of touches and from the edge of the 6-yard box slotted the ball past goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

McKennie started the move toward the second goal with a long pass down a flank to Weah, who crossed. A sprinting Pulisic got behind Israel Reyes and Sánchez, stabbing the ball in with his left foot from 6 yards,

Montes was given a straight red card in the 69th for kicking Balogun while the two were challenging. McKennie was given a red card two minutes later for placing a hand on Sánchez’s neck during the ensuing arguing and shoving.

Pepi scored his seventh international goal, receiving a pass from Dest, taking a touch and rounding Ochoa. Dest and Arteaga were sent off in the 86th for shoving each other.

“There was moments on both teams that we could have handled better.” Callaghan said.

US has a legitimate chance to win the ‘26 World Cup if we can develop a top notch striker. Pulisic will be on downside of career in ‘26 can’t be the guy for us then to win it all

Cannot say one bit U.S.A. has a legitimate chance… they are on home soil and if they are ever gonna do it 2026 is the year…. But look at how many teams are just flat out better than them and it’s not close… France, brazil, Argentina just to name a few. But, anything can happen in a single game, look at USA vs spain in the confederations cup.

As for Pulisic, he’s going to be in the prime of his career.

Re-signing Berhalter for the next cycle is insane from a strategy standpoint, with or without the off the field garbage with the Reynas. USMNT management is a total dumpster fire with anybody with competence running away. There’s several better choices out there for coaches. Before Pulisic, when was the last time USMNT developed a true striker? Landon Donovan? Berhalter’s tactical plan for the Dutch game was a travesty. Is four more years of that junk really the best USMNT can find?

But on home soil you have to go for it. I think semis are realistic, but at that level you are playing against teams that have talent levels above the USA, unless some crazy things happen. Best thing the hope for is the Copa America is a disaster and USA is forced to make a change after that, I think Berhalter is a horrible choice. He was outcoached vs Wales and completely outclassed vs the Dutch.

He’s a one trick pony and cannot adjust his system at all, and how do you tell someone, who IMHO is the most purely talented player on the roster, before the tournament even started, that he wasn’t going to play much if at all? I get you may not be ready to start and play 60,70,80 minutes, but he would have been perfect vs wales in a 10-15 minute roll. Instead you bring in Jordan Morris??? Instead you start Ferreira, who was playing like dog crap at the end of the mls season and hasn’t played in a competitive game in 2 months? This is a disaster waiting to happen.

It was only 1 game of course, but BJ Callaghan had the team looking excellent on Thursday. He's still in charge of the team on Sunday and through the gold cup, so even though the Berhalter decision is already made, he's still getting an opportunity to make an impression. If he continues to get performances like that, it at least puts some pressure on Berhalter when he takes over.

With pulisic’s inability to stay healthy over the last few years it’s hard to say he’ll be in his prime for ‘26

Balogun switching allegiance to the US is huge. Musah, McKinney, Adams held their own in Quatar. Could be one of the stronger midfields in the tournament by then.

Agreed with Berhalter not being great, but could sort itself out

The MMA midfield is ok, but you are fooling yourself if you think that would be one of the stronger midfields by then… Adams is a hustler, he’s a strong defender with minimal on the ball skills…. McKinney is good, has to get in better shape and fortify his club situation…. Musah has the highest upside and is still young, he played great against Mexico… they are still a very very average at best midfield

Mexico has fallen big time, they looked horrendous and the players knew there was a big gap between them and the USA…. Canada is now the rival.

I don't think USA is better than Brazil, France, and Argentina, BUT, in my lifetime, this is the most complete team I have ever seen, and they are not even in their collective prime yet. While Mexico is broken right now, there have been other moments where USA would be happy to go up 1-0 and defend the rest of the game...but this game was the first time in a big-time environment where they got up early and stepped on the throat of an opponent. It was great to watch, not just because they did it, but they had the confidence and swagger to know that they were the better team.

And Berhalter takes all that away with his system and tactics… but Mexico at all levels is in a tailspin… youth to senior team are a mess…. Whatever is going on down there is not good… USA could have scored a few more goals at least if they didn’t take mexicos bait and start fighting back… once the game became chaos you just wanted to get out without anymore cards or Injuries

The USMNT rarely dominates matches, even against teams far weaker than this Mexico side. Then we always get the same story about how concacaf is so much more difficult than people realize. Rowdy fans, poor pitch quality, aggressive play, etc. So personally, I'm pleased to see a thoroughly dominated match, even if it isn't against the strongest Mexico team we've ever seen.

Another convincing win, this time against Canada.
How many times under Berhalter could we say that? Especially vs Mexico and Canada. Granted Berhalter didn’t lose to Mexico, but his tactics were the reason why each game went down to the final minutes. Mexico is so bad right now the there is zero coming up for the future, they whole federation is just really bad.

Under Berhalter usmnt had a really tough time with Canada. If they played Berhalter ball last night the result would have been different…

USMNT beats Canada to win second consecutive CONCACAF Nations League title

By Associated Press

LAS VEGAS — Folarin Balogun and Chris Richards scored their first international goals, both off assists from Gio Reyna, and the United States beat Canada 2-0 on Sunday night for the Americans’ second straight CONCACAF Nations League title.

Richards scored in the 12th minute from a corner kick and Balogun, who debuted in Thursday’s 3-0 win over Mexico after choosing to play the U.S. over England, doubled the lead in the 34th.

The Americans were again led by interim coach B.J. Callaghan, who took over May 30 and also will run the team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup starting next weekend.

Gregg Berhalter, brought back as coach Friday 5 1/2 months after his contract was allowed to expire, won’t be on the sidelines until September exhibitions.

While the U.S. extended its home unbeaten streak against Canada to 22 games dating to 1957, Canada remained without a title since the 2000 Gold Cup.

Reyna sparked both goals, then left at halftime with a calf injury and was replaced by Luca de a Torre.

Reyna’s lack of hustle in training at the World Cup and his family’s angry response created the controversy that let to Berhalter’s January departure.

Reyna’s corner kick found an unmarked Richards, who bounced a header from 7 yards to the left of goalkeeper Milan Borjan for his first goal in 10 international appearances.

The Americans had not scored from a corner kick since Jordan Morris’ goal at El Salvador on June 14 last year after Weston McKennie’s initial effort was saved and de La Torre crossed to Morris.

Reyna fed Balogun for the second goal.

The forward held off Scott Kennedy with his right arm to slot past Borjan.

Callaghan made three changes from Thursday, inserting central defender Walker Zimmerman for Miles Robinson and midfielder Brendon Aaronson and right back Joe Scally for Weston McKennie and Sergiño Dest, both suspended after getting red cards against El Tri.

Only 2 games obviously, but that's why I'm impressed with Callaghan right now. I'm interested to see how he does with the B squad in the gold cup. If they continue to dominate, I'll be if the opinion that bringing Berhalter back was premature. Of course, even with BJ on the sideline, I kind of assume Berhalter will be pulling the strings from this point forward.

Weird things happen when you play your best 11 and not play lower quality players because of the “fit” for the system

That's a good point, we rarely - if ever - saw Berhalter pick his best 11, even during the world cup.

Injuries and red cards prevented a true best this weekend also, but they did play the best they had available and it showed in the two performances.

I really hope Berhalter cuts back on the rotating of call-ups these next 3 years and gets that current core group as much playing time together as possible. If other guys force their way in - fantastic - but no more experimenting with B lineups just for the hell of it during international windows (I'm fine with the B lineup for the Gold Cup).

In lieu of world cup qualifiers, I hope to see the team over in Europe or South America every window playing countries who are on their qualifying bye dates.

I’m fine too with the B squad for the gold cup…. I just don’t like Nations league that much but it is what it is… and I am tired of the constant call ups, and starts for players like arriola, long, Acosta, Moore…. It’s a crime Berhalter played Shaq Moore in the World Cup over Scally…
