Men's National Team beats Mexico in most dramatic fashion! ⚽🇺🇲As a lover of the "beautiful game" I've been down on the US Men's team for some time but this was a tremendous win! Christin Pulisic with the deciding goal on a pk. Then Horvath comes in as the substitute goalie and makes a terrific save on a penalty kick (on a terrible bs handball call) in extra time to seal it for the US. Crazy, contentious, energy filled game and one that will put US soccer back on the map as a world player in the future. Came back from 1-0, then down 2-1, amazing job and kudos to our guys!!! 🙌💪👊First ever Concacaf winner!🏆

Almost forgot about that incident. It was one of those wild nights that happens in sports every so often with loads of drama, lots of story lines and great entertainment. People will be talking about it for years. Glad I got to see it live.

CONCACAF needs to do something to the Mexican soccer confederation and their fans acting like pure scum... why is it at any sporting event someone throws something onto the court or field security is there in no time to escort the offender away, but at a Mexico game it’s a free for all??? You can’t have fans throwing full bottles at players and injuring them. I did take joy at the end of the game when Guardado took down Pulisic on the sideline and a bottle came flying and hit one of the Mexican players... that was fitting.

The players seem to embrace the hatred from the Mexican fans and used it as motivation. It’s the first time in a long time I saw the American grit and toughness on display from a USMNT. It was a great game and even better result

That game was indeed crazy and I am so glad our young team won. We have some dynamic players on the front line. Gotta get that defense and midfield working a little better. Amazing Mexico did not score more goals but both goalies played great. Too many free runs at the goal. If the USA can figure out our defense and midfield we might have a future. I like the focus on the young guys that is what we need to do. There is some serious talent and speed on our team albeit inexperienced. Playing Mexico is like chewing glass. Always hurts and ugly to watch.

Thought we got thoroughly outplayed and wasn’t looking forward to PK’s. wasn’t a fan of the formation or personnel to start.

That handball call was terrible, but we also benefited from some calls a few times too

seems like the best collection of talent in my lifetime for the US squad. Hopefully we put these players in the right position to be successful and can generate and execute on more scoring chances within the run of play

Game was crazy!
Team finally showed heart and balls!
Berhalter still needs to be fired.

Ah you mean more then just Olympic soccer… no clue

Sad, and pretty inexcusable but true. Terrible job on their part. Another reason last night's win was so important as we look towards preparing for the next World Cup.

This is a sidebar conversation talking about the Olympics but I do believe they'll take place. Japan has done a terrible job with Covid. Their vaccination rate is around 3% for a highly educated, wealthy country with excellent health care. Apparently there's a lot of superstition and distrust with the vaccines that's prevented wide spread vaccination. They're reaping the sad rewards of that now with rising infection rates and questions and calls for a cancelation of the Games. I've been to Japan a number of times, my cousin actually lives there. I love the Japanese people, their food, the ladies ;)and their culture but they surprisingly dropped the ball on this one. I think they'll find a way to play the games though. I'd love to go if they'd let foreigners in but unfortunately that's not possible.

Important win for the USMNT and with only 3 players 28 or older the team is very young and with continued improvement and player development the future for US soccer could be bright. Let’s hope that this win against Mexico is the start of this team’s resurgence.

You could tell the Mexican players felt pressure last night, and probably the first time for a long time they did. They get hot headed and frustrated. They feed off the frustration of their fans and get even more pressure from that. It’s a beautiful sight to see.

The refs let Mexico slide as Hector Herrera who is a punk and a dirty player  👎should have gotten his second yellow and been sent off coming in studs up on Tim Weah...dangerous and dirty play. No brainer call. Should have gotten a red card leaving Mexico down to 10 men but terrible, terrible no call. Glad we survived that and the awful handball call!

Yeah that was an obvious yellow and that was the ref being conservative and knowing a player was on a yellow and not wanting to send him off when if it’s a yellow then give a yellow. I don’t understand what is and what isn’t a handball anymore so I’m not even going to try to talk like I understand what’s going on with that. But that ref was bad all around

Kyrie Irving is almost hit with a water bottle, Westbrook has popcorn poured over him, the nation erupts. Gio Reyna has a full bottle hit him in the head and he needs medical attention and crickets.

Agreed, VERY strange and not right. Sad thing is as big a game as you, I ,and other soccer fans saw it I think it was low on the radar compared to other sports in The States. I think interest in soccer in the US will really start to grow in the coming years but sadly now it takes a back seat to the other major sports.

Was it really a big game though? There was no buildup because it was a first-time tournament that’s rather meaningless in the grand scheme. Once the serious stuff begins with the qualifiers, interest will gradually build. It’s sort of ironic that the qualifying failure the last cycle might actually make people care more about this one.

Every game against Mexico is big, friendly or not. Doesn’t matter if it was a new tournament, it was a championship final against Mexico. This is the first big game most of these players have had against Mexico and was a huge learning experience for them, and it put Mexico, their media and fans on notice. They are concerned now

It’s a big game, but this wasn’t one to command attention like a qualifier in the coming months, or even the Gold Cup, would. There was really no build up to it.

Gold cup isn’t going to have a lot of build up either, a lot of the players on usa that played last game won’t be there for the gold cup, and Mexico won’t bring all their players also.

Admittedly I'm not more than a casual soccer fan and don't follow it that closely but I had no idea there was a game until it popped up on the ESPN home page at some point during the game. I'm usually at least aware enough that there's a big game or qualifying tournament going on.

It was all over cbssports.com, even their top storyline the whole day Sunday.

I would love to scrap the Gold Cup in favor of joining with CONMEBOL to make the expanded Copa America (like from 2016) a regular thing.

I’m not sure I’ve ever looked at that site, and I don’t think I’m alone

Almost the same here. At least 90% of my page views there are links from here. Otherwise I can count on one hand the number of times I'm there of my own volition in the course of a year.

It’s been 4 decades of thinking interest will grow although I agree by thinking it’s getting close...

It’s definitely grown…. It’s just there are probably more followers of the EPL and other European leagues and tournaments than there are of the US National Team, at least until the World Cup gets closer. And as for MLS…..

Professional soccer has grown in the US since the MSL began in 1996 and you now have 27 teams in the MLS which include 3 from Canada with those franchises in Canada’s largest cities , Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver and the league expects to expand further. I believe that interest in the USMNT will grow when we put a more competitive product on the pitch and that product has success on a consistent basis and individual players who attract a following like the USWNT.

It’s been a long long time since the USMNT had a competitive match, and there really wasn’t any hype about the team then. There is a lot hype with the young guys on this team, the future is incredibly bright depending on what Berhalter turns into. You can’t be putting Tim Ream out there and not expect Mexico to attack his side. Ream played Left Back, he played zero minutes on his club team at the position, and he really wasn’t playing that much to begin with.

The team plays again tonight vs Costa Rica, berhalter wanted this game to replicate the WCQ schedule. It will be interesting to see who plays tonight since you are going to want as close to a full squad each game for the WCQ’s. But this is just a friendly so we will see… Musah I can see starting tonight. I’d also like to see someone else other than Sargent start. Sargent to me has been underwhelming

This current group of USMNT players, if they continue to grow and live up to the hype, has a chance to make a massive difference in the growth of US Soccer. This is the first time anyone can look at our roster and think we have a shot to make a deep run in a world cup. 2022 is the warm-up for these guys. In 2026, on home soil, expetations will be high and interest will go through the roof if they deliver.

Newly made up tournament to create more "competitive' matches instead of constantly filling international dates with friendlies outside of the wcq cycle.

i like soccer but all of the concurring tournaments and regular season games makes it confusing. it also seems like every game a team carries half their players... it completley nukes my interest in staying current with it.

"we wont have have the team" why? why is any of this of interest to me.

So if you're referring to the gold cup, yeah, there's not much reason for it to interest you unless you just love watching soccer. Mexico and the US will both bring their "B" teams and will still be the favorites.

Why are they bringing B teams? Esssentially because the tournament matters for nothing but bragging rights over each other and they're both more concerned with giving their players the summer to rest up (since most of them just finished up their club seasons) ahead of world cup qualifying in the fall...which actually matters for something.

The "prize" of the gold cup used to be qualification for the Confederation's Cup, which is sort of a mini world cup contested only by the champion of each region (Gold Cup, Euros, Copa America, etc..). That tournament was recently abolished though, leaving the Gold Cup worth very little as it's rarely more than a 2 horse race and the US and Mexico don't need it to play each other. To be fair, the "Nations League" that the US just won isn't any different in that regard. They likely only brought strong teams because they only needed to commit those players to 2 games.

That's why I made the commment I did regarding scrapping it to join Copa America. Yes, it would likely be dominated by South America, but the expanded tournament would give the Americas our own version of the Euros. The benefit to us would be the more prestigious regional tournament, the benefit to them would be a whole lot of American $$$.

Europe does a tournament similar to what the USA just played in. Gold cup doesn’t matter especially with the few opportunities the staff has to look at players. Injuries happen, form disappears and you need depth. The game tonight doesn’t mean anything, but it means a lot because you need to know who your 23 is going to be come WCQ time and it’s going to be a big night for players like Musah. I think Dike is in the squad tonight also… for the casual fan there isn’t much to watch, for the die hards and loyal fans it’s a chance to see what some of the young talent in Europe can show…

but even like in the EPL or other international. the squads are always split. if a team isnt playing with their entire best squad then i dont care
