Villanova buying Cabrini University

Not as convenient, but I've been saying this for years about St. E's. It's only a matter of time before they are forced to close. FDU is next door and will most likely acquire the 200 acres to increase their campus to 500 acres. However, maybe there is an opportunity for us acquire the land in some creative way (i.e. merger, etc.)

Beat me to it. I've been saying that for years. The challenge is that FDU is next door and probably foaming at the mouth for that land. This would be like Ivy Hill park and apartments going up for sale and FDU buying it. We would never let that happen.

I think the only way we could get it is if we merged.

I posted a thread on it here. Might make more sense that dealing with the South Orange nonsense and could potentially expands our footprint with new dorms, buildings, parking, and athletic facilities. FWIW.
 
The St.E’s land is prime real estate that developers have had their eyes on for years and could easily outbid SH for that land. In a merger with St.E’s the order of nuns that run St.E’s are not going to give that land away without getting a big paycheck.

That land is zoned "university." They can't sell to a private developer. For example, I live 5 minutes down the road in Madison and Drew University has been trying to sell 40 acres of their campus to a private developer. It's been a multi-year battle. Long story short they can't do it because the town won't rezone the land. Developer doesn't have interest in land they can't develop without massive litigation and town pushback.

FDU and St.E's are technically in Florham Park/Morristown so they might be more lenient than Madison but based on what I've seen it's not as easy as just selling to a developer and walking away.

you can roll your eyes all you want but the fact of the matter is that a large number of private colleges and universities across the nation are going to be closing in the next 25 years. It's not a silly conversation.

A recent Harvard study predicted that as much as 50% of colleges and universities will close/merge in the coming decade.

Agree 100%. And Dr Nyre himself referenced about this issue and that we would be looking at opportunities etc

There really is no paycheck… it’s more like an asset transfer, and I would think much like Cabrini, Saint E’s would want the legacy of the school to live on in some manner with another Catholic school.

It’s unfortunate that these schools hold on to the very end, even though they see the loss is piling up year after year. I’ve seen this happen with other nonprofits, and it really does a disservice to their mission and the people that work for them.

I know that, and there’s tons of public schools that should close as well. But the Seton Hall / St Elizabeth discussion has been beaten into the ground here.

This isn’t about “buying” the land.
 
st elizabeth is like 30 minutes away from SHU..... maybe we can buy land in new york too...
You’re not wrong. It’s not really a convenient location. But there is a plan to expand the geographic footprint (to what extent I have no idea). I don’t know where else you acquire usable land tho.
 
This conversation has occurred dozens of times in recent years… but that‘s fine. The leadership of the university we love needs to be planning on a timeline of generations not just 5-10 year increments.

It’s not as far as you think. And it was the original location of SHU. Plus it’s served by a train station.

Caldwell is a nice but small campus. According to its website, it has 70 acres. Caldwell is close to Seton Hall. Maybe 15-20 minutes away by car. With that distance, what makes sense to put there? For that matter any other land away from Seton Hall.

FDU student population has been shrinking for years and the academic quality of its students is very poor. Why would it want to expand? Private schools in NJ , save Princeton, Steven’s and SHU, are struggling with nearly open admissions and declining enrollments. SHU has grown its student body in the past decade and improved academic quality of its incoming students.

Because the Sisters of Charity likely care more about the legacy of the school (like Cabrini) than the money. They don’t care about cashing a check.

Our student population is maxed out because we do not have any more dorm space to accommodate more students. Also because of that the academic quality of students has also improved .

FDU is a candidate for the endangered list. Not as dire as St E’s but not in a strong position at all.

All it takes is one politician with his hands open up approve the re-zoning. Sleazy politicians always have a price.
