SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Senior Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) recorded her first career double-double as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team downed St. John's, 3-1 (25-16, 25-12, 28-30, 25-20), in Queens on Wednesday.

Hansen tallied a match-high 18 kills to go with a season-high 10 blocks. It's the fourth straight match that she's recorded at least 14 kills.

St. John's entered the contest as the BIG EAST's leader in blocks and blocks per set, but the Pirates tallied 14.0 team blocks, compared to just 10.0 for the Red Storm.

Seton Hall (10-10, 4-4) dominated the match from the start. The Pirates never trailed in sets one and two, leading to blowout final scores. The Hall scored 10 of the first 11 points in set one, as the Pirates cruised to a 25-16 first set win. In set two, the Pirates were even more impressive. They used a 9-0 run to take a commanding 11-3 lead. Seton Hall had a .375 attack percentage in set two and held the Red Storm to -.107 in a 25-12 set two win.

Set three was significantly closer than the first two. The teams combined for 13 ties and eight lead changes. Trailing, 12-11, the Pirates scored five straight to take a 16-12 advantage. St. John's responded however, and five straight points by the Red Storm tied the set at 21. The Hall had three match points (24-23, 26-25, 27-26), but couldn't get winning point, and three straight points to finish the set gave St. John's a 30-28 marathon set three win.

Turning Point:
St. John's however, couldn't sustain its set three momentum. The Pirates scored four of the first five points in set four and never looked back. Three straight kills by Hansen capped an 8-2 run, which gave The Hall a commanding 15-8 advantage. Seton Hall rolled to a 25-20 set four victory, and four-set match win.

Notes & Numbers:

    • With 18 kills tonight, Hansen is just two kills shy of 1,000 for her career.

    • Junior Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) came just two digs away from her first career double-double. She finished with 14 kills and a career-high eight digs.

    • Freshman Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) totaled 41 assists to go with six digs and a career-high four aces.

    • Junior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) finished with a match-high 23 digs. It's the ninth time this season and 24th time of her career that she's totaled at least 20 digs.

    • Freshman Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) recorded a career-high 13 kills.

    • This is Seton Hall's first win in four sets this season (1-2).

    • Seton Hall improves to 13-11 all-time against St. John's.

Big game Sat. against Nova 2pm at Walsh. I will be there all PIRATE FANS should try to make there to support the ladies a very good YOUNG team!!!!

Nice W ladies! Good to see a lot of underclass athletes contributing to the wins. Bodes well for the future.

Big match for the gals against Villanova today at home(2pm). If the Pirates are
going to get back into the top 4 they really can't afford to lose too many more matches.

They put themselves into good position to win almost every time out, but this year's
squad has a tough time closing out matches. So they're not that far away, but it's a learning process. They do lose Amanda Hansen after this season and hopefully they can take
another shot at a BigEast title this season.

Nova is tough in 2nd place in the conference right now. These matches all seem to
be very exciting and Walsh is a good venue. PSN at 2pm.

It looks like this year's team is just not ready yet. They've brought in some nice talent, but it
may take a year or so to get them back to a high level. This was a disappointing match plain
and simple. Villanova, may be the best team in the conference and they exposed the inexperienced
Pirates for the sweep in 3 sets.

SHU seemed to be out of place and not focused especially in the 2nd set. Nova is a big team and
the Seton Hall gals couldn't match them. In fairness it just takes time to blend all of the new parts.

They still have plenty of matches left and have to find a way to steal a couple if they are going to qualify
for the Conference Tournament. Hopefully, they have had their low point in the season. They are actually
not that far away from becoming a factor again. It may not be this season. It looks like they just need a
bit more height on the frontline to match some of the better teams. This coaching staff knows what they are
doing and it does take time to replace some all-time players.
