Seton Hall (6-7) played the Bluejays close early in set one. A kill by Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) cut Creighton’s lead to 10-9. But Creighton responded with an 11-1 run, and the Pirates’ never recovered, falling 25-13 in the first set.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a team-high 15 kills as the Seton Hall volleyball team outlasted Georgetown in five sets, 3-2 (25-23, 26-28, 25-21, 20-25, 15-7), for its first BIG EAST victory of the season on Sunday.

Schroeder and senior Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) combined for 29 kills and just four attack errors. Both players registered an attack percentage of at least .400 and tallied at least five blocks.

While most of the team statistics were close, the Pirates had a dramatic blocking advantage. Seton Hall recorded 14.0 team blocks, compared to just 4.0 for the Hoyas. Four Pirates recorded at least five total blocks, led by Hansen, who finished with seven.

With set one tied at 20, Seton Hall scored three straight points to take control. A kill by Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif) put the Pirates in set point at, 24-21, and three points later, a kill by Schroeder preserved a 25-23 set one victory.

Georgetown struck back by winning an epic, 28-26, set two to even the match at one set apiece. Set two featured 18 ties, but the Pirates seemed to be playing from behind most of the time. Although the set featured four ties after the teams reached 20 points, The Hall was never able to take a lead or put the Hoyas in set point.

With Georgetown leading, 18-14, in set three, the Pirates went on a 7-1 run to take a 21-19 advantage. With the score tied at 21, The Hall scored the last four points of the set and an ace by Sara Connell (Dousman, Wis.) capped a 25-21 set three victory.

The Hoyas jumped out to a 14-7 set four lead, but The Hall went on a run to close to within one point at 18-17. After a Georgetown timeout, the Hoyas again pulled away from Seton Hall, scoring four straight points and cruising to a 25-20 set four victory to tie the match at two sets apiece.

Turning Point:
Georgetown grabbed an early 3-2 lead in the decisive fifth set, but it was the last advantage it would hold. The Pirates scored four straight points to take a 6-3 lead and prompt a Hoyas timeout. With The Hall leading 9-6, it finished the match with a 6-1 run to claim set five, 15-7.

Numbers & Notes:
  • Hansen finished with 14 kills. She has now surpassed 900 for her career (907).
  • Three Pirates reached double-figures in kills, Schroeder (15), Hansen (14) and Cherise Hennigan (11) for only the second time this season.
  • It’s Schroeder’s second 15-kill match of the season and the fifth of her career.
  • Coffey finished with a team-high 46 assists. It’s the sixth time this season she has recorded at least 40 assists in a match. She finished only one dig shy of her fifth double-double of the season.
  • Junior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) led all players with 26 digs. It’s the sixth time this season she has recorded at least 20 digs and the third match in a row.
  • Seton Hall improves to 7-0 in games that it wins the first set this season.
  • Seton Hall improves to 4-1 this season in five set matches.
  • Seton Hall improves to 7-7 overall this season and 1-1 in BIG EAST Conference play.
  • With the win, Seton Hall improves to 13-21 all-time against Georgetown. The Pirates have now won five of the last six meetings with the Hoyas.
