SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brinza, Italy), Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis.) and Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) all had double-doubles as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team held off Connecticut, 3-2 (25-23, 26-24, 15-25, 20-25, 15-12), in the BIG EAST opener for both teams on Friday.

The Hall looked strong through two sets, taking a 2-0 lead, but UConn bounced back by winning sets three and four. The Pirates never trailed in set five thanks to 10 kills and only one attack error in a thrilling 15-12 victory.

Bucciarelli finished with a career-highs of 18 kills and 13 digs for her first career double-double. Holland had 14 digs and 11 assists, while Jakubowski tallied a team-best 24 assists and 14 digs.

Sophomore Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and junior Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) also had strong offensive nights. Walsh finished with 15 kills and only five attack errors, while Lucas tallied 12 kills and only two attack errors.

SET 1:
Despite a close affair, Seton Hall never trailed in the opening set. A UConn attack error gave the Pirates their largest lead of the set, 11-5, but a 6-1 run by the Huskies cut their deficit to 12-11. With the score tied at 15, Bucciarelli struck for three consecutive kills to put The Hall back on top and force a Connecticut timeout. With the score tied at 22, another kill by Bucciarelli, followed by an ace from Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) put The Hall in set point, 24-22. Finally, up 24-23, a kill by Lucas won it for the Pirates. Bucciarelli had eight kills in the opening set alone.

SET 2:
The second set was one of the closest all season for Seton Hall. The teams combined for 16 ties and four lead changes and at no point did either team take a lead greater than three points. With the score tied at 22, a kill by Lucas put The Hall in front, however, the Huskies rallied to tie the score at 23. Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) put Seton Hall in set point, 24-23, but again UConn tied the set at 24. Finally, a pair of UConn attack errors gave the Pirates a 26-24 set two victory.

SET 3:
Whereas the Pirates never trailed in set one, they never led in set three. UConn had a .478 attack percentage, compared to just .138 for The Hall in the third set. The Huskies opened the frame with nine of the first 12 points. From there, The Hall never got closer than five points in a 25-15 loss.

SET 4:
Although the fourth set was closer, the result was ultimately the same. With the score tied at four, UConn scored five of the next six points to take a 9-5 lead and never looked back. A kill by Laila Wallace (Munster, Ind.) cut the Pirates' deficit to 16-14, but UConn scored the next two points to again boost its lead to four. A block by Lucas cut the Huskies' lead to 21-18, but UConn scored three of the next four points to enter set point, 24-19. The Hall staved off one set point, but fell, 25-20.

SET 5:
The Pirates dug deep and refused to fall in an early hole in set five. The Hall scored five of the first six points of the decisive set capped by a kill from Walsh. UConn responded with four of the next five points to cut their deficit to 6-5, but The Hall maintained its lead and a block by Bucciarelli and Wallace extended its advantage to 9-6. The Pirates' lead was trimmed to 13-12, forcing a timeout, but out of the break, a block by Subasili put them in match point, and a block by Bucciarelli gave The Hall the thrilling win.

SET 4:
