Walsh Gym

historic walsh gym is going to soon mean nothing to a lot of people.

we still need the extra space , all it would do is raise the cost to build no?

Hey guys, what to do with Walsh has been looked at multiple times over the last decades by engineers and architects. Everytime the results of these studies is that Walsh can’t be expanded. It’s not going to be torn down. IMO, the University has done the best it could with what we have.

It’s such an eyesore when we play there even with the improvements but I get the charm of the place in SHU history for a game or so anyway.

There’s no way it would ever be expanded. It won’t work in that area. And did you see the hard time we got trying to build the new practice facility? Months upon months of delays discussing water runoff, tons of resistance to anything.

I'm not sure it can be expanded at this point given it's surrounded on three sides with the pool, Rec Center/Field House and now the practice facility.

Beyond that, the ideal is so unfeasible at this point, for the reasons you stated and many others. The infrastructure in that area of campus would have to be completely overhauled to get people (cars) onto and off of campus.

We haven't even talked money and I'd suspect the cost would be astronomical for the ROI.

Not to mention the legal hurdles the University had to clear with the South Orange Planning Board and the PR hits it took from the City of Newark for the flood mitigation issue.

Nothing you can do about Walsh or building our own arena that hasn't been discussed many times.

Best thing would have been for Seton Hall and Rutgers to link up and build an 8,000ish-seat arena we both share and can be used for other NJ events. NJ would pick up a lot of the tab like they do for all things Rutgers. Instead Rutgers is spending millions refurbishing a dump, we spent millions refurbishing a relic with a stage and 1,000-seat capacity plus $55 Million on a practice facility. And neither of us has a quality high-major place to play games.

Obviously that will never happen as too much bueracracy in state government and at both schools to ever get cooperation.

Next best answer for SH is to play some buy games in a small gym like NJIT instead of Walsh. Could fit 3x the fans which would more than cover a fee to NJIT.

I thought we have been through this over and over. There are just not enough access roads in and out of there. The only spot would be on the current baseball/soccer fields. Not even sure what that space could fit in there. In addition, there would have to probably have to be shuttle buses from parking lots located?? Ever been to an Army football game at West Point?

Walsh is a perfect venue for The Women's Basketball Program. In fact, that is possibly where some excitement could be in 2025. We'll have to see. The Men can play a couple of OOC games there and that's fine too. The mentality has got to get back to recruiting and playing important games at The Rock. The BigEast as long as it exists is the conference that Seton Hall has to play in.

Architecturally I don’t think Walsh can be expanded. Something to do the the construction of the roof. I think the entire space would need to be demolished and then take the real estate for the pool. I think in theory that would be enough space to have a small arena, but you still have to deal with the town and zoning.

I’m sure if they had the money and were absolutely hellbent on getting it done they could come up with something much better than the current day setup but I really don’t see that happening. The time to expand it was 50 years ago.

I don't see any reason Rutgers would do this.

That arrangement makes less than zero sense. The state will build them a new *on-campus* arena. Why on earth would opt for a shared arena in an inconvenient location? If I'm not mistaken, they are getting ~$50M from the state to update the RAC but haven't completely ruled out an entirely new arena.

Playing off campus is a last resort type of arrangement.

SHU owned Ivy Hill park and the land that the Ivy Hill apartments are on 100 years ago. they had to sell it to stay financially viable. along with other lands in SO and Newark.

Um, you forgot buying St. Elizabeth's.
And buying the Livingston Mall and building an arena there.
And adding football.

Also, when are we reinstating track & field?

Livingston Mall is the perfect location for an arena. Roads, space, etc. Make it a combination basketball, minor league hockey and you got a chance.
