With the victory over St Peter's this afternoon (81-65), Tony Bozzella's team finishes undefeated at home in the non-conference schedule for three straight years. It was not quite a trap game against a dangerous opponent, but it was a workmanlike kind of game where it took a quarter and a half for the team to get out of bed and dressed for battle (noon-time games are like that).

Jordan Molyneaux had earned the first sub into the game through hard work and success so far, but she got two quick fouls and did not get fully into the game the rest of the way.

Very solid bench work from Jordan Mosley and Latecia Smith in particular gave the starters the oomph needed. Additional solid minutes came from Taylor Byrne. Martha Kuderer earned a chance to come in earlier, but was not much of a factor - although she did something I passionately adore - closely followed the easy runout that was MISSED, rebounded and got fouled and drained both free throws.

It seemed like a short bench was the order of the day today, I would have to defer to coach for what the reasons were for keeping the starters working (perhaps it's the drop and give me fifty pushups for not showing up to the game kind of theory).

St Peter's had a lot of shorter but very stocky players who undercut, elbowed and pushed non-stop - it got a bit dirty under the rim rather regularly. This seemed to cause a disadvantage to our bigs, so Tony run a number of three-guard sets (Kena, Aleesha and TT), which seemed to mitigate this unusual advantage.

Kena Richardson was off at first but clawed her way back with a solid game. Aleesha put the team on her back for stretches. Flashes of really strong play from Tab and Tiff helped build up a decent buffer for the win. Bird played her average - losing some balls and gaining some through grit.

The standout "extra spark" of the game for me was TT Smith - in the third and fourth quarters, her legs had huge spring in them and she was flying around and past everyone on the floor. Solid hands, solid court vision, she will blossom tremendously for us.

A bonus for me was spending time with Kena Richardson's mom at halftime - a terrific lady and we both share the same view on what is important for these women playing this game - that they become leaders in what they do in life.

You are welcome - not really a game recap, sort of a bunch of player notes - but that's what I've got today.

Couldn't get there either. A lot going on this week/weekend.

Thanks for the notes.

Congrats to the Pirates for an excellent OOC. As previously mentioned, anybody would have been very happy before the season if they went 10-1 before BE play. (I hope they play for OOC home games next season.)

It would not surprise me for the team to win at least 12 BE games, which would put them at 22-7 going into the BE tournament.

And I would also not surprise me if they played even better. We'll see. If they come out on fire every night they will do some damage.

BTW, thanks for the recap BluePirate.

That's what I love about the team. They don't rely on one or two players. They are deep and in any given game one or two players can be the star(s).

Blue definetly agree with you on the importance of women using sports as a stepping stone to taking leadership positions later in life. One thing though that has puzzled me. Title nine was a wonderful thing in getting more females playing sports and you would think that this would translate into more female coaches but it hasnt studies show that since title nine there are more men coaching female teams than there were before. Any thoughts?

400, you are touching on something really important, which is that we have noted different key bench players during this schedule. It is NOT the same six and seven in each game!

Thanks Blue. It looks like it's us, De Paul and St John's for the top of of the BE. Do I have it right? Nova right behind ?

I think that is clearly right, 64, the one I am curious about the most is St John's since I am not clear why they are so high given their record and RPI right now.

Did Mrs. Blue go today, and if so what did she think? You usually speak for both of you and today you didn't...

Really great question, I cannot say I have any answers, but I can say that mentoring women and supporting them has been a lifelong deep commitment of mine because I deeply believe in the value, the means and the end for us all.

My beloved was with me today. She normally tweets directly to the coaches and team, while I write on the board. We are of a like mind on the comments either way since we talk through the game, after the game and every day regarding the team we love.

DePaul might be the favorite as the league season starts. SHU, SJU and Nova will also be in the battle for the top spot.

According to Bennett Ranking, it's DePaul most definitely - the record, the RPI, the opponents - but our case is equally good if not better (arguably of course) - however the massive inertia involved in the top 25 (both WBB and MBB) makes DePaul get the extra boost, the easier road and requires us to do double the work to overcome.

I understand St John's and Nova in the mix for sure. Nova lost Leer, may still have those exceptional sisters on board. Have to check the roster of the Johnnies - they had two players that went toe-to-toe vs our two (DiDi and Daisha) - but I don't get how they're receiving votes with a much lower RPI and a poorer record by far.

Naturally, ranking is not an entitlement and the only thing to do is win like crazy (with a nod of the cap to Tom and Steve).

They still have Grant and Handford.

Blue - do you think that more time will be needed to bring all those associate and assistants to a point where they feel ready/confident for head coaching positions? Just look at Tony's former assistant...Stephanie is head coach of a division 1 team and a bit older than his current assistants.

Dear Buzzershot, yes, I think we are thinking the same way, it will take time. But Coach is consistently prepping them by having them handle the half-time and end-game radio interviews. I know that Lauren and Tiffany are delegated as man and zone specialists, so he's enabling each to master a critical area of knowledge. I love how he consults with his staff during media timeouts to ensure that there is a shared discussion around the flow of the game and where to head next with the bench. This fosters a collegial but firm style, which will give them a strong identity when they assume the reins in a head coaching position.

The Big East women's Head basketball coaching ranks is composed of 7 Men and 3 women. This many years after the implementation of title 9 and with 100's of thousands of women having played college Basketball you would think that those numbers would be drastically different. Buzzershot Great point I also love the way our coach is mentoring and grooming his assistants to be ready to become head coaches.
