While down in STT I had a chance to speak to Lincoln HS associate head coach James Barrett who accompanied the Booster Club on the trip. And yes, he like mama Whitehead (Erica Rambert) paid in full.
James told me some interesting things.
1. Tiny Morton is one tough son of a gun as a coach but he really cares about his kids and the players know to listen to his message and not his tone. James was really high on Morton and thinks he will be a great addition to SHU.
2. When Desi first came to Lincoln his junior year it was as a shooting guard but because of the team's limited size he played mostly center for Lincoln.
3. Desi can really shoot from the outside, something that I noticed first hand in the 4 practices I witnessed. Down the road he will play SF for the Hall and might even play some 2G if he develops.
4. Desi was heavy and out of shape the start of his junior year. He worked his but off to become the athlete that we now see.
5. Before the tournament he told me it doesn't matter who we play the Hall is easily the best team in the tournament and they will bring home the hardware.
When I asked him if he had any doubts about the frosh playing under pressure he spoke only about the NY guys and Delgado (doesn't personally know Ish and Anthony) and he said none whatsoever.
James played ball at Sam Houston Sate and graduated in 2007 after playing at Lincoln for Tiny.
