A month or two ago I noted the timeline given to me by a very good source re Whitehead's decision to forgo his junior year at the Hall.
This past weekend I spoke to someone imminently familiar with what happened and although it's very similar to what I previously posted it does differ slightly.
The Thursday before Whitehead announced he was leaving (I previously noted Tuesday) he told those at SHU he was absolutely returning. He didn't want to leave.
Unfortunately for the school as noted, mom (and not noted) his agent Andy Miller convinced him otherwise. Miller in particular stressed his age and the fact that there wasn't much more he could do in college to increase his draft stock.
In tears Whitehead called the staff and informed them that he was leaving early for the NBA.
Now here's more info that I was not aware of.....
At the draft as the middle of the second round continued Isaiah was getting both frustrated and embarrassed. He got up from his seat at Barclays and was thinking of leaving the arena when one of his people got a call from the New Orleans Pelicans. They had two picks (39,40) coming up and told Whitehead they would choose him with one of the picks. Shockingly when their time came to choose they did not, instead trading both picks. This further upset Whitehead and again he was about to leave when the Nets called and told him they were going to choose him with their 42nd pick gotten by trading up in the draft.
All's well that ends well. But IW was thisclose to returning to the Hall.
