What the hell was this?

That was clearly Chuck Pagano calling a play that his team was completely unprepared to run. Belicheck is obviously in his head and instead of playing to the Colts strengths he tried to get tricky and ended up tricking his own team. What a dummy. I loved his story about when he had cancer and overcame it and all but I've never thought much of his coaching. I hate the Pats but they made the Colts look bad on that play because they were prepared and obviously smarter ala Belicheck coaching.

Pagano looks stupid, and took the blame. The whole thing was ridiculous but he never wanted the ball snapped in hopes of drawing NE offsides, or only snapping it if the Patrios were misaligned. Dumb all the way around. Very poorly constructed team the Colts have put around Luck, including Grigson and Pagano.

It was one of the worst play calls in NFL history, and the Colts’ decision to try a bizarre fake punt in the third quarter Sunday night didn’t get any better when they tried to explain it.

The Patriots certainly couldn’t contain their laughter after Griff Whalen inexplicably snapped to Colt Anderson on a fourth-down play late in the third quarter, paving the way for a 34-27 New England victory.

Everyone else was just left scratching their heads.

Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano, after taking nearly 40 minutes before addressing the media, took the blame for what he repeatedly called “miscommunication,” saying the play was mainly intended to draw a penalty on the Patriots.

But it was the Colts who were penalized because their line shift was illegal, and neither Pagano nor Whalen would explain why Whalen — a 190-pound receiver by trade — decided to snap the ball with at least four Patriots directly in his face.

Anderson was instantly swarmed for a 1-yard loss, giving the Patriots the ball at the Indy 35 and setting up a touchdown six plays later that essentially put the game out of reach.

The embarrassment for Pagano only got worse when Colts punter Pat McAfee admitted afterward Indy had started working on that play last year and put it back in the playbook just for the Patriots.

“The look was not there that we normally have in practice when [the fake] is a go,” McAfee said. “There must have been some miscommunication between the snapper and Colt, and it turned out to be one of the most failed fakes probably of all time.”

The debacle perhaps sealed the fate of Pagano, who is in the last year of his contract and whose job reportedly had been in jeopardy even before his desire to outsmart Bill Belichick ended up burning him.

The Patriots, fuming at the Colts for setting off Deflategate with a complaint to the league in January, couldn’t hide their glee at Indy’s self-inflicted disaster.

“I’m glad they did it,” New England wide receiver Julian Edelman said. “We were alert, and our guys went to where we had to go. Shame on them for trying that again.”

Edelman added a dig at the Colts’ wackiness.

“You’re not surprised with anything [with] how they play,” he said. “They tried the onside kick [Sunday night], and they did that [fake punt]. You know, Colts.”

That would be the difference between good coaching and bad. Grigson and Pagano are lucky they play in a terrible division otherwise their ineptitude would have been exposed earlier.
