Where are all the backseat coaches this evening?

Pretty dumb post. I’m not a “back seat coach” but I am a realist.

Good win against a comparable level opponent. We underperformed in the OOC. Sure, things look good when shots fall.

Are you back to “best back court in the Big East” as one game erases everything we’ve seen?

As a SHU fan, I’m thrilled for the win and hopeful this is a sign they’ll play better. We’re still a bottom 1/3 BE team.

Why didn’t you post this after the Monmouth game? Don’t be fooled by the name on the front of their jerseys. They’re a worse version of us. The announcers tonight were insistent on burying us for leaving their shooters open. Same could be said for Mizzu. They defended us as poorly as possible. Am I happy with the win? Yes. Of course. But I’m putting very little stock in this win given how poorly we defended and our extremely sloppy play down the stretch.

Defense still a problem, should have dominated that team in rebounding also. But all sins are erased when you shoot the lights out!

Happy for Wusu to have a great all-around game - his best game as a Pirate. And Dawes showed how valuable he is when he plays within himself. Dre played well too and we needed it because the bench didn't have it today.

Hopefully they can play with some consistency and get at least a split in Week 1 of BE play.

Consider the source. He's a good guy, but probably incapable of being objective given his role in raising funds. I admire the optimism, but it certainly comes with bias.

SHU in the last couple minutes did not foul their drives to the basket. (That would of stopped the clock and would of given a possible 3 points play) We broke theirs qq

We were in the midst of an epic collapse reminiscent of the Oregan loss under Willard. Thankfully we held tough in a hostile environment with refs favoring Missouri.

Willard was notorious for blowing end of game situations. We had a late 7-ish point lead at home against Michigan State during the Myles Powell holy water game. We played like we were down 7 and lost. Sha was playing it the same way. He was a great point guard and should know how to instill these late game scenarios in his guys. Hopefully this was a great learning lesson for them and they don’t let it happen again.

It helps when your shooters are making their shots. Team showed what it can be. Mizzou not a good defensive team, but to our credit we took advantage of what they gave us for the most part.

When you cut through everything it at least gave us hope for a season. The people that had reservations still do and this game doesn't dismiss those concerns.

Good job by Sha having his key players more relaxed . It definitely paid off. Excellent focus by Dawes & Wusu to start the game and then Dre Davis really elevated his play after the first several minutes. Now they need to play a competitive game at The Rock vs UConn. A win would be a season game changer, but at minimum not to get overrun. I would imagine going 10-10 in the BigEast would be a lofty goal from what we have watched in the OOC. I'm hoping for 10-10 in the BigEast and 2-1 at MSG. I guess that would put them near the Bubble. Maybe unrealistic, but hopefully. Need some upsets against the ranked conference teams along the way.

Well said. Except I would remove "probably incapable".

I predicted during the 3000 "Dawes/Wusu" threads that anyone who didn't declare them among the best guards/wings in the land would see stuff like this once they had a game where they shot it well. All that really does, of course, is make folks who are huge fans but may differ on things of opinion want to not frequent the board. Not exactly the best idea when you are trying to drum up interest in the program so fans can pay college kids, because it isn't like we are Wildcat faithful in the middle of Kentucky.

There are plenty of legitimate criticisms of the coaching so far this season but one that’s ridiculous to me is the notion that having Coleman/Sanders on the floor for 30 minutes a game gives us a better chance to win than Dawes. No way. Not even close.

He will surely have more frustrating games to come this season, but today is the reason why you leave him out there.

I am always happy for a Pirate win.

But at this point in time this game is an outlier.

The Hall shot 59% from the floor today.

In their previous P5 games they shot
36% vs USC
35% vs IOWA
43% vs Baylor
36% vs Rutgers.

Missouri is also ranked 113th in adjusted Ken Pom Defensive metrics.

To make me believe that the season has more hope they need to do it more than 1 out of 5 games vs better competition. Plus the BE isn’t going to get easier. 3 teams ranked in the Ken Pom top 10. 8 in the top 60.

So far we have played Baylor (15), Iowa (49) USC (44) Rutgers (77) and Missouri (87)

Because I know we have kids who are capable of shooting the 3, and they were in a rut. The shooting slump isn't a coaching issue.

If we shot our team FG average of 46% against RU and USC., we win those two games. We obviously had off games and lost, but that's no reflection on the coach.

If? Are you including all of those games against low major opponents? Shall we revisit what our coach let Dawes do during those losses? I don’t want to take away from the win tonight and I do always appreciate your optimism, but let’s not act like we’re world beaters for beating an average at best opponent. If and when we get torched by the heavy hitters of the Big East, are you going to create a thread about backseat coaching?

Today was an outlier.
Similarly, the entire season has been an outlier for both Wusu and Dawes in terms of shooting. Let's see if they can sustain.

Missouri not a great team, but is athletic, has talent and is in the SEC. Also, played Kansas tough on the road. Let's see if we can build something. Beats the heck out of losing.

Listen we have JR Smith lite as our starting guard. We’re going to lose a lot but win some surprising games when the shots fall. That inconsistency is maddening to watch for a season

Isn’t this kind of silly? What would have been the outcome tonight if Seton Hall shot its season averages?

Happy for the much needed win, now onto the real schedule.

Except for Nick Honor. That dude does not look like an SEC basketball player. Perhaps if he wants to spend a 7th year in school, the football team can use him as a lead blocker.

Anyone see Carino’s pregame tweet? Honor was playing for Fordham six years. College sports are…funny.

This is the type of post that makes me hate this board and thinks we have some dumb fans. We have 5x the amount of games this year that tells us the opposite of what happened tonight. Instead of you saying yes mizzou has a bad defense, but we saw a TON of improvement from all involved and carry that into the next game, you take shots at fans who have rightful gripes. So weird.

Great game tonight. I saw much better play from those I’ve criticized. I’m super happy about that and hope it continues. I WANT to eat my words. Btw we aren’t advocating for some people to play over others because we think they’re world beaters…it’s because we’ve seen others play us out of games with no adjustment AND we rightfully have pessimism for this year so we are advocating preparing for our future.

I always go back to the Barclays game vs. Oklahoma.

Same. We had a good shooting game finally. If Sha did something that helped them mentally (it happens in sports), great, then let’s see some consistency now.

It’s still troubling that our defense is mediocre at best when the head coach emphasizes defense as his number 1 priority from day 1.

Our 2 point defense is good.

Our 3 point defense is hurting and the fix is simple. We over help for no reason. Yesterday, Richmond, Coleman, Dawes and perhaps others lost their man on corner for NO reason. Watch Sha when that's happens. He is yelling for a reason because he is coaching up this aspect of the defense and it is not consistently being practiced by the players.

I hope the coach decides to give the kids more days off between games if the MO game is the result.

Kadary fills the state sheet, especially his ability to rebound at his size, but I feel he turns it on and off. When he's aggressive he can be so much better. imagine a few more touches in the post against a smaller pg defender

I think the title of this post has a lot of truth to it. I also think Sha is not the guy to blame for the losses.

When you look at the win you have to see the team buying into Sha system as you are starting to see the extra pass. The issue is that Sha still needs to pull from both the starters and the bench. Against Monmouth the young guys looked like they deserve more minutes and Sha was like pump the breaks, he need to see that more consistently in practice. Against Mizzu what did you see? The young guys making young guy mistakes and that is when SHU started losing the lead.

The starters on the other hand Sha is trying to get Kadary to be more of an Alpha and you still see it in spurts. Not going to win without him being that guy in crucial moments.

Dylan and Al have been playing horrible and although they shot well last night Mizzu clearly didn't read the scouting report. Al had 2 wide open threes to gain rhythm in the game. that is all you really need for a rhythm shooter to gain confidence. Dylan played well but will it continue?

Sha keeps saying these guys need to chill out and play within themselves.

The defense needs to improve greatly but its really nice see when they actually move the ball. If they can get more consistent they will be a fun team to watch. Will that translate to wins? I don't know it still seems like a lot of what ifs that need to gel, but you do see glimpses of a good team.

Kadary did not look very inspired on defense or offense. He no longer looks like the best player on the team.
One game doesn’t change much. He’s still the best player on a mediocre team. Fingers crossed for a sign of life this week.

We just completed the hardest travel week of the season. 3 games in 7 days. 12 hours of flight time covering 3,600 miles. I was expecting a let down against UConn as our team left Kansas City late Sunday and landed Monday, with one day to prep for UConn. We crushed UConn on Wednesday, before boarding a plane on Thursday, with only one day to prepare for Xavier. Our players were exhausted today likely contributing to the poor shooting performance.

Last Saturday we were looking at a road game in KC, home vs. UConn, and a road game in Cincinnati. We were facing a potential 0-3 week, and ended at 2-1. Today's blowout sucks, but it wasn't unexpected.

We have a ten day break before our next game, giving us plenty of time to recover and prepare for Providence on January 3rd. Going forward our travel schedule looks favorable. If we can get more minutes out of Sanders, Brown and NgaNga, fatigue will not be an issue.

I'm very happy with this past week and looking forward to January. GO PIRATES!!!
