NEW YORK – Sophomore Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) of the Seton Hall men’s basketball team has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week after averaging 20.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a pair of Pirates victories last week, the conference office announced Monday.
The sophomore point guard continued his stellar effort during BIG EAST, first by dropping 19 points, a season-high seven rebounds, three assists and a block in the 79-60 win over St. John’s last Wednesday. After The Hall got out to a slow start, Whitehead energized the Pirates with an athletic block of Durand Johnson from behind on a fast break. The block sparked a first-half ending 15-4 run that featured a pair of his three-pointers.
Whitehead followed with one of his best performances of the season last Saturday at Creighton. He poured in a game-high 22 points, including 17 in the second half and dished out six assists as the Pirates topped the Bluejays in front of a sold-out crowd of nearly 18,000. He scored seven consecutive points that jumpstarted a 14-3 Pirates run that built up a 22-point lead. For the night, he was 9-for-17 shooting, including 4-for-6 from three-point range. It was his sixth 20-point game of the season, third in BIG EAST play, and it was the ninth time he’s had at least 15 points and five assists in a game with six of those coming in conference.
