NEW YORK –
Sophomore Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) of the Seton Hall men’s basketball team has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week after averaging 20.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a pair of Pirates victories last week, the conference office announced Monday.

The sophomore point guard continued his stellar effort during BIG EAST, first by dropping 19 points, a season-high seven rebounds, three assists and a block in the 79-60 win over St. John’s last Wednesday. After The Hall got out to a slow start, Whitehead energized the Pirates with an athletic block of Durand Johnson from behind on a fast break. The block sparked a first-half ending 15-4 run that featured a pair of his three-pointers.

Whitehead followed with one of his best performances of the season last Saturday at Creighton. He poured in a game-high 22 points, including 17 in the second half and dished out six assists as the Pirates topped the Bluejays in front of a sold-out crowd of nearly 18,000. He scored seven consecutive points that jumpstarted a 14-3 Pirates run that built up a 22-point lead. For the night, he was 9-for-17 shooting, including 4-for-6 from three-point range. It was his sixth 20-point game of the season, third in BIG EAST play, and it was the ninth time he’s had at least 15 points and five assists in a game with six of those coming in conference.

In the rankings, Whitehead is:
  • Sixth in the BIG EAST in overall scoring (16.0 PPG) and fourth in conference scoring (17.6 PPG)
  • Fourth in the BIG EAST in overall assists (4.5 APG) and fourth in conference assists (5.1 APG)
  • Seventh in the BIG EAST in overall three-pointers made (2.0/g) and tied for fourth in conference three-pointers made (2.1/g)
Whitehead and the Pirates are 15-6 overall and 5-4 in BIG EAST with top 100 Kenpom wins (at the time of the game) over Ole Miss, Georgia, Wichita State, Marquette, Providence and Creighton. The team is home for the next three games, beginning Wednesday night against Marquette at Prudential Center at 8:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on FS1, and Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin will have the radio call on AM970 The Answer.

Tickets to Wednesday's game and all Seton Hall men's basketball games can be purchased by calling the Seton Hall Athletics ticket office at 973-275-HALL or by logging on to Ticketmaster.

Congrats to Isaiah. A well deserved recognition. IW has been playing great. He is everything we could have hoped for mid way thru his sophomore season. He's still improving. Where would we be without him?

Can't complain he had a GREAT week but Delgado deserved something after 2 monster double doubles
