It seems far longer than just 3 plus years ago when on April 19 2017 a gangly young man playing his scholastic senior season in Florida, although born and raised in the foreign country of Georgia, chose to take his talent to South Orange and play for Kevin Willard and Seton Hall. Mamu, his more manageable nickname and how he will be referred to from here on out chose the Prates over his second choice, Southern California while also spurning the likes of South Carolina, Maryland, Vanderbilt among others.
And if it seemed odd that a player from Georgia through Montverde would choose the Pirates, look no further than the connection of his prep coach, Kevin Boyle. to Seton Hall assistant coach Grant Billmeier. Boyle, years back was Billmeier's high school coach at St Patrick's in Elizabeth and their bond remained strong from those prior years.
Maybe no one more elegantly than Jerry Carino, SHU beat writer, summed up Mamu's commitment when he wrote the following.....

And there's the rub, if he returns.
Mamu has not made any official announcement yet, and his coach is not pressing the issue allowing his big man to make the announcement of his choice at the time of his own choosing, delayed by the pandemic the world is facing at this time.
If Sandro chooses to keep his name in the NBA draft he will be lost to SHU. That decision must be made no later than August 3. However, if he withdraws that still won't guarantee that Mamu will resume his career in South Orange because he is getting strong interest from teams in Europe to begin his professional career.
Still, with all that said I have included Mamu in this series of returning players. The reason being I expect (if there is a season) he will return to the Hall and take his place as one of the best players in the conference as well as one of the best stretch 4s in the country.
He has come that far from the skinny wide eyed teenager from Georgia.

https://www.bigeastcoastbias.com/2017/8/26/16194202/sandro-mamukelashvili-seton-hall-profile
- He hails from the Eastern European country of Georgia and made a name for himself playing club-level ball in Italy for two years before arriving at Montverde last June. The addition continues a fine Hall tradition of imports from that part of the world, including Arturas Karnishovas, Rimas Kaukenas and Patrik Auda.
- He’s coached by Kevin Boyle, who mentored Hall assistants Shaheen Holloway and Grant Billmeier at St. Pat’s in Elizabeth (there’s the Pirates’ connection). Here’s what Boyle told Eurohopes.com about Mamukelashvili’s skill set last June: “I was impressed with his versatility on the perimeter and his passing ability. I feel that he could potentially be a first-round draft pick in the NBA if he keeps developing and becomes more aggressive on the offensive side of the ball."
- He turns 18 on May 23, so there would seem to be significant room for growth. In a recent dispatch, Scout.com chief evaluator Evan Daniels said Mamukelashvili “is equipped with good hands and touch and is capable of making a jump shots from mid-range out to three.” Scout ranks him as the No. 28 power forward in the Class of 2017.
- He also took official visits to Vanderbilt and USC. Maryland and Boston College were recruiting him hard as well.
- He’s a lefty, which makes for an additional matchup challenge.
- He will inject youth into a veteran, established frontcourt that includes Angel Delgado (who presumably will be back), Ish Sanogo, Michael Nzei and Desi Rodriguez. It’s doubtful that Mamukelashvili starts over those upperclassmen, but he’ll be a factor in the rotation for sure, and his versatility gives head coach Kevin Willard some intriguing player-combo options and an enviable amount of front-line depth.
And there's the rub, if he returns.
